LEGO Ideas 21317 Disney Steamboat Willie Building Kit (751 Pieces)

So I have a nephew who LOVES legos. When he first saw this in a catalogue, he was so excited and wanted it so badly. Let me tell you, its expensive. But the joy he had receiving it was totally worth it. Packaging had some dents in it, but they were small and that was just the box. No complaints here!

I am very impressed with this set! This would make a perfect gift for a Disney fan to put on display. Mickey and Minnie look like they walked out of their classic cartoon. They both have silver accents that really bring them to life and catch your eye. They can be setup on the boat or you can use the included Mickey shaped display piece which you can use as a stand or a background for them. Both the boat and display stand say 1928. My 9 year old son loves LEGOs and he wanted this set as soon as he saw it in the catalog, which surprised me, so it will appeal to a wide variety of ages. He’s loved other LEGO Ideas sets and this set is just as outstanding. The instruction booklet includes a short description of the importance of the Steamboat Willie cartoon and stills from it which he enjoyed reading. It also has the designer explaining his process of creating the set. I love how inspiring it is for kids to hear about the process of idea to actual set. My son is an expert LEGO builder and really enjoys the more challenging sets. He loves building with Technic pieces so he had fun building the gears on this set which required a lot of Technic pieces. I was surprised to see colors as he was building, as I expected the entire set to be monochromatic, but there are colored bricks hidden inside. I’m assuming that was for ease of building. The crane really works and so do the gears under the boat. As you roll the boat it will move the smokestacks up and down. My son tends to drive cars hard and I think had the same problem playing too hard with this set as he keeps needing to fix the gears. Luckily he knows what he’s doing so that’s not an issue but if young kids are playing with this you might want to teach them to play gently. I’m hopeless at fixing my daughter’s LEGO sets without the instructions in a step by step way so I could see how this could be frustrating if you have pieces falling off. I really cannot say enough about how great I think this set turned out. It’s a wonderful piece of Disney history to have on display. It looks great on a shelf when my son isn’t playing with it. Highly recommend this for fans of Disney and LEGO

Nice Disney LEGO kit. I deducted one star because the smoke stacks don’t move smoothly. But unless you’re playing with it, it really doesn’t matter. Nice big pieces and clear instructions. Easy to put together.

I am absolutely thrilled that this is not all black and white! The colorful bricks used for the inner workings of the steam boat really made it fun! I wish you could have seen my smile when I opened the box! The build is not difficult, but has some areas that are a little trickier than others. The step by step instructions were easy enough for a 9 year old to follow. It took him approximately 4 hours or so. He had one smokestack get stuck, but we found a fix to help us. Simply pick up the one smoke stack and gently put it down. I know some others had to rebuild theirs by removing one piece. We did not need to do that. Your finished steamboat is aproximately 10”x5” and features moving smokestacks, and moving paddlewheel! It comes with both Mickey and Minnie! I love knowing all the cheerful colors fill the interior of our Steamboat!

Best Christmas gift

Ive got two Lego crazy boys and my older one, in particular, tends to love the Lego Ideas sets. This one is definitely creative, using only black, white and gray bricks to define the original Mickey Mouse Steamboat Willie which was, of course, in black and white. Even though my son wasnt initially wowed, he liked how intricate and solid the build itself was. Its a better than average Lego final product that definitely looks like something different and special; more for display, than play, but a unique and interesting gift for Lego, or Disney, fans of all ages.
