I grew up playing every pokemon portable & console games since the 90s. I loved the first three gens but didnt really enjoy what came after those (probably because I got older and the new pokemon didnt really look right + the repetativeness of the similar storylines/playstyles). I didnt expect myself to enjoy Pokemon Sun but got it anyway to just check it out. I got this yesterday and OMG I could not get my hands off of my DS (that had been collecting dust for the last few years) for 3 straight hours. I feel like gamefreak really tried hard to add new aspects that make this game more fun and a little different. If you are a pokemon fan, its a must have.

I bought Pokémon Sun while my girlfriend got Pokémon Moon. We both played the 6th gen as well. Pros 1. Fresh story line with some fresh Pokémon in a new location. Everything looks good. 2. Some new mechanics to help keep things interesting. 3. The trials are a fun new thing to replace gym battles. 4. Tons of extra game content to keep you busy. 5. Easy to engage with online players. 6. Better options and game menus help make things faster. 7. You can trade up using Poke Bank from prior generations. 8. This game just throws stuff at you all the time. Spend your money wisely and youll never run out of anything. 9. Love how you can heal Pokémon of status effects after battle. 10. Enough of the same old experience to feel familiar and nostalgic. 11. Love the whole night and day mechanic when catching Pokémon. Gives you motivation to pick up and play during certain hours. Cons 1. There are some lag issues on the older 3DS models. Especially in combat and some menus load slowly. 2. The tutorial in this game is loooooong. You have the regular tutorial stuff then you have to do some free wandering and then on to the Pokémon trainer school? OMG just give me my starter and let me go! Weve all been doing this for years, give us some credit, game! 3. The Hawaii theme is fun, but they overdo it on occasion. I get it, were in Alola now. They have a cool wave and everyone ends their sentences with yeah?... Calm down, game. 4. The characters, especially your rival, are highly one dimensional. Everyone is so hopped up on their dominant personality trait and its wildly over the top fairly often. Not terrible or anything, but I get it. Alola rocks. The professor talks like Wakka from final fantasy 10 and doesnt wear a shirt and your rival NEVER STOPS SMILING. The girl doesnt like Pokémon fighting but heals your Pokémon so you can keep doing it. Settle down, game characters. 5. The new Pokémon skins arent bad, but they arent really necessary. Did meowth really need to look like its giving you bedroom eyes 24/7? Wouldve been cool if theyd added some differences, but the Rattata is essentially the same as the other Rattata with an Italian mustache. Overall, this is another Pokémon game Ill sink dozens of hours into. I like it, its fun. Im about 6 hours in now so I still have hope the characters will even out over time. Worth the price of admission.

Ive been playing Pokemon games since Red/Blue and this is the first one I havent finished because I just dont find it very fun. Maybe Ive out grown the game, but I was playing Y just weeks before I got this game and I played all the way through and was hatching eggs for IVs for hours a day when I finished. This is definitely the least challenging Pokemon game while also having probably the deepest story. For me, there are too many cutscenes too often and they can be long as well. Seems like there are a lot of unnecessary dialogue scenes when you just want to play the game in the beginning. The trials are much easier than the gyms were in previous games, and never once did I feel threatened by any challenger or Totem Pokemon. Freeing up a move slot by not having to have HM moves in your party is nice, but it does feel like some strategy is taken out of the game. For once, I dont see myself breeding for IVs once I finish the game.

Did you know there are no more HMs in this game? Yeah, there are no more HMs. If youre not a fan of long (2 minute or so) cutscenes, I wouldnt recommend this generation of pokemon. But if youre craving to have cutscenes in a pokemon game to make it much more of a story-based RPG, then this has ya covered. The first few hours (depending on how fast you get through the intro) are pretty hand-holdy, but they mostly let go and let you explore afterwards. Its a great starting/restarting point in the series, and they dont to expect you to know everything about pokemon.

Have to say for this to be such a special year for Pokemon, I am rather disappointed in Sun and Moon. For me the best game for Pokemon was ORAS. So much more you could do in that game. I dont care for the Poke Finder and miss the DevNax in locating pokemon. I miss the ability to go to a route or area and seeing what I might still need to get with regards to pokemon. I dont care for the limitations in fishing and even surfing. The biggest disappointment so far from what Ive seen is the inability to re-fight trainers to level up and gain more $$. I liked that in ORAS because I enjoyed working more than one team which is more time consuming with Sun and Moon because it lacks the ability to re-fight. ORAS had a lot to keep one busy until the next new Pokemon game release. I dont see this as being the case with Sun and Moon. And the ability to catch shiny pokemon is for me more frustrating. The new method of chaining is a pain. One other major thing I dont like about this new generation game...........we cant transfer between ORAS and Sun/Moon except through the Poke Bank which isnt even available until sometime in January. The one plus I do find with Sun and Moon is the way the HMs were handled. Now that was a cool change.

this series of Pokemon game is just not for me I dont like being restricted to the Hawaiian islands I feel kind of claustrophobic I like the feeling of land under my feet and not feeling like the land is sparse. And I really dont understand the trend of Pokemon games almost not having fire Pokemon at all you can literally go through the whole roster of Pokemon and there are less then a hundred fire Pokemon. Whats up with that? We need more fire Pokemon not less.

This game took over my life for a solid week and thats totally okay (I actually bought a 3DS just for this game). I finished it with fifty hours of game play and I only wish I had slowed down to extend it. This is sooooo fun! My last Pokemon game (unfinished...) played was Black 2, so going from Black 2 to Sun was probably more eye opening for me than those who have played every game, but oh my gooooood. So worth it, it is just so fun. I love how customizable your trainers appearance is and just how different the game is compared to traditional Pokemon. I really hope Pokemon continues in this route for future games, because its an amazing one!

Nintendo must have figured the series was getting stale because they really made this one different from the others. Removing some of the constants from previous games (gyms) and adding new stuff (pokepelgo and island scan) make it feel fresh. This feels more like a general RPG that just another pokemon game. My only con (I would deduct half a star if I could) is the fact they make some things too easy. For example, now it tells you in the fight what moves will be effective before you use it. That and some other stuff is a bit hand holdy but I guess they are hoping for unfamiliar players that started with Pokemon Go would begin the handheld series with Sun and Moon.

What can I say? Great new addition to the Pokemon line. Ive been playing these games since Red/Blue first arrived and I had started to get a little weary of the same formula. Now, Im not one to suggest that GameFreak/Nintendo changed it up greatly, but it was a very pleasant discovery to learn that this game had changed the rather predictable pattern of the past games. The new features are pretty awesome and as a pokemon fan, it was a lot of fun. If youve never played a pokemon game and want to, either this or Moon would be a great starting point. Hours of fun. If youre like me and have played all the previous pokemon games, you can look forward to some well-thought and cleverly designed features that really are enchanting and add new play-ability to the franchise.
