Snappy Tools Plug Cutter, 3/8

> 3 dayAfter reading many poor reviews of other plug cutters, I decided to spend the extra few dollars for this one. Im glad I did, as it seems to do the job well. I cut a couple dozen plugs out of Butternut (havent cut anything hard with it yet), and I got pretty clean results. I gave it 4/5 stars only because it came covered in a black sooty coating, which was a bit of a mess. I know its to protect from rust or whatever while in storage, but an oil or wax coating would be nicer. Not a big deal.

> 3 dayI used the 3/8 plug cutter on cypress, which is a fairly soft wood. It left a good finish on the plug with no tearing which would have been a problem on soft wood had the tool not been sharp. I was unable to use the chamfering feature at the top of the tool, though, as the taper was too steep and if I cut too deeply with the tool the plug diameter would be too small for the hole I was plugging. All in all its a fine tool and should give me many years of service.

> 3 dayWorks perfectly for the Snappy drill and countersinks

> 3 dayNo complaints. This little thing works perfectly on mahogany, but probably requires a drill press, which is what we used.

> 3 dayThe sticker placed on the back of the packed covered instructions; the stick could not be peeled off without destroying the instruction. The instruction are available at the Snappy web site- except I wonder what the “DO NOT...” phrase said.

> 3 daymaking plugs for Ipe.... it says drill press only but i can make it work with my variable speed drill.... nice a slow to avoid over heating, cut a few and plug a few.... If it is cutting ipe easy enough than it should be fine on any wood at all.

> 3 dayI still have the first one of these that I bought 8 years ago! Use it all the time, works perfectly and has NEVER become dull. Ordered another recently, just to have a back-up and the over all size/thickness of the steel has been reduced by 20%. Hope it holds up as good as the first one:)

> 3 dayThe first thing I noticed was the finish was rough and did not have the matte or semi-glossy sheen of other plug cutters I have had in the past (and the one thats pictured). There were little bits of white gradoo stuck in the crevices like it had not been cleaned before packing. I wonder if a final step in the manufacturing process had been skipped. When I went to use it in my drill press, it seemed to need a lot of force to work into the wood. It also squealed and chattered. I honed the cutting edges which seemed to help a little, but sometimes it cuts well and sometimes it chatters like crazy., not sure why. Im considering throwing it out and trying something else, but it does work, just obnoxiously, so I guess Ill use it for now.

> 3 dayCuts perfect and true 3/8 plugs. Ive probably cut close to 100 plugs from full figured walnut and around 20 from some really sappy pine and its still cutting perfect. I really like that if your able to cut the plug from 3/4 material it will chamfer the top of the plug on its own to make fitting them in the home a breeze, but I have cut plenty from 1/2 stock to save on material and just touched them up with a file. If or when it finally breaks I wont hesitate to buy another.
