> 3 dayThis scanner is a great bargain. I purchased the uniden bc 355n first, but I had lots of trouble trying to program It. I sent it back to Amazon and ordered this one. It is easy to program if you follow the directions in the manual that comes with the radio. The manual is very helpful with a lot of information, and easy to read. The knobs are large and easy to operate especially if you have trouble with your hands. The speaker sounds good with plenty of volume. The radio comes with the manual, antennae, and adapter you can plug into wall outlet for power. It also holds 3 AA batteries for power backup. The radio also will receive FM and national weather service broadcasts. If you are looking for a scanner with lots of room for many channels ( this holds 500) then this is the radio for you, and at a great price!!

> 3 dayIt is easy enough to locate the local frequencies which you may want to cover. I do not usually read user guides, but I followed this one closely. I consider myself tech savvy, but this was difficult to set up and is still not fully set up. We want this functionality but are not getting good use of the device because the setup information is so poorly informative. It stays off all the time. Setup is on my to-do list, but its been several weeks.

> 3 daySmall size but still loaded with some great extra features. For anyone just getting into using a regular scanner or a back-up ... this is your winner! Comes with a small antenna but still receives most signals you will want to hear and add an outdoor antenna later. Complete with AC wall power supply and a small user manual. Scanner case is plastic with touch button controls and an orange glow back lighted display which is easy to see in most lighting. Receiver is very good for Hi-band VHF, Weather, Fire, Police and EMS. Lo-band VHF and UHF were good but not the quality of Hi-band VHF. Radio has Alarm Clock and FM radio with a 3-cell AA battery backup for clock. Channels say in memory even with no AC power and do not need battery backup. Scanner is medium level easy to program for a newbie but one must read the user manual first and no computer is needed for use. Using the scanner can be a small learning curve of two to four hours of hands on use. This is one nice scanner to hear the latest whats happening in my local area now. Anyone wanting a good scanner this is the one to buy! I will follow - up post later.

Greater than one weekinstruction manual not so good but a little button pushing needs practice. the instructions dont follow through with all necessary scenario steps necessary. mine does run on batteries. three fresh ones lasted a touch over 15 hours. reception is real good with magnetic base antenna up on top my of bird cage and its downstairs ground level + maybe six feet higher than ground level. audio quality is as expected pretty good. uniden should expand on this form factor. its an attractive rig. a more complete frequency spectrum radio would be rather nice to own with the scanner ability as well. i seldom give five stars and didnt think it deserves five but four reflects needed expansions.

Greater than one weekMy old handheld SONY scanner bit the dust after decades of great performance. It would pick up all kinds of radio traffic in my area, so I definitely feel I got my moneys worth. This new Bearcat is a disappointment. Perhaps every signal in my neighborhood was weakened or somehow diminished at the same time, but for whatever reason, this scanner doesnt pick up nearly the amount of traffic my previous Sony delivered. Ive positioned the Bearcat in exactly the same multiple locations in and around my home as the Sony, and still very, very limited reception. It pulls in FM and weather okay, so I know the antenna works. But as far as picking up local sheriff and police, this Bearcat leaves a LOT to be desired. I suppose the low low price reflects the low low receptivity.

> 3 dayI bought this hoping it would have a better audio quality than the small handheld baefeng that I also have. I was not dissapointed. It comes in nice and clear and it also stays on the channel longer so you can hear the whole conversation whereas the baofeng would skip to next channel the split second they paused in conversation. It has a blacklight display which you can toggle on or off and a telescoping antenna. I live in populated small town on the east coast and I get crystal clear reception from the police and fire without having to even put the antenna up. For the people that say this doesnt work for them I dont think they understand how these work. First go to google and find out what channels exactly your police and fire etc broadcast on. Once you know which channels they use you can program them into the unit and then it will scan between those channels nonstop. You cannot just press scan without entering the channels you want to monitor and expect to get anything. Its not like your car radio. It als has a battery backup and a clock and FM radio which also sounds nice.

> 3 dayDirect tuning should be more obvious and intuitive. Punching the numbers for a frequency does not tune to that one. Perhaps I am missing something.
