Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor Paint Set, 12 Half Pans w/ Water Brush Pen and Mixing Palette

Great case, and mostly great paints. Only concern is that the cool red is dull, so I replaced it. The other paints are vibrant, as are the extra colours I got in the Cotman line. I bought this set so I could get the purple as opposed to other Cotman sets. The case has space, if you remove the brush, for three more dollops of paint. There are six mixing wells.

I wish the red in this set was a little darker, but these colors are good for the primaries and for mixing a wide variety of colors to make up for the size. Its good for if you want to get better at mixing your own, something I needed to work on. The container isnt anything too crazy, 6 mixing wells in the lid, white with rounded corners. The trays have a tendency to fall out when its new and it doesnt have dried paint sticking it in place. I dropped it and these little trays of color flew everywhere along with the paint that separated from it, it was a mess. So in that regard I still prefer how the koi travel set has a detachable pallete tray, sponges, and the colts are already dried and stuck to the pans. But this set has the upside of being fully customizable. You can arrange the colors anyway you like or change it out for others. If you want to use your favorite tube paint just squeeze into the pan and let dry.

I love this set. Enjoy it myself and bought it as gifts. Very easy and convenient to use. Colors produced are beautiful. Only wish the brush inside were of a bit better quality. It leaks when try to paint details.

I bought all these watercolor pens but these are way better and cheaper. I love them!

These are awesome paints. I have always liked Winsor & Newton paints, both student and professional grade, and used them for years, so I felt confident purchasing the Winsor & Newton 0390658 Cotman Water Colour Paint Water Pen Set, Set of 12, Half Pans. I purposely decided to buy the this set because I wanted a self contained set that included a water brush inside the palette. I thought this would be a great idea for sketching on the go, that is, until I used the water brush. The water brush leaks water droplets all over the place from around the brush tip, messing up my work. Plus paint pigment gets wicked up from the brush tip inside of the water reservoir. This contaminates the clear water in the reservoir so that subsequent pigments get contaminated. This makes it completely useless. Ive used several water brushes from inexpensive to expensive, a variety of brands, and have never had one perform this poorly to where Im wondering if maybe I have a dud(??) Another thing, the palette area of the box sits up higher and at an angle to the lid mixing area. Not sure what the purpose of this is. Its a bit awkward to work with. If theres a reason for this unusual design Id like to know. Im feeling a bit disappointed with this set right now, mostly because of the water brush that doesnt work.

The colors were more vibrant than I would have liked. Was going to use them for painting landscape on the go during hikes, but will now be using them for coloring cartoons figures. Half pans jostle around in the tray a bit, but the quality of the paint itself was pretty good. Hardly require any wetting! Brushpen was semi-faulty.

The paynes grey is amazing. Ill get a brighter red in the future since alizarin red is a bit dull. I stop using the turquoise!

I recently had bought the Winsor & Newton Cotman Brush Pen Set for my birthday last month and so far I had encounter some problems but overall I really liked this paint set. PROS: ◾Color Selection are great for mixing! I tend to mix pastel, bright or warm colors for my drawings and there wasnt any color which I felt was either unnecesarry or bad. ◾Good for Traveling, The size of this set easily fits into the small compartment infront of my bag! With a water brush and tissue paper you can easily paint your sketch and clean the paint on the mixing well with the tissue paper. ◾The Design of the set makes it so that the mixing wells stays flat while the paint is tilted forward to face you which makes it easier to see the paint when your using the paint set. ◾Removable Pans the pans are removable so if you dislike some colors or want to refill the empty pan you can easily switch it out. CONS: ◾The Brush Pen broke after I had only use it for a while. The stuff that was holding the brush in place broke off while I painting which ended up pushing the brush tip inside and I couldnt fix due to the brush pens design. ◾The Pans easily falls out of the palette but this is easily fixable with some blue tack. Overall, I really like the design and quality of the paint set but I do think that you should switch out the brush pen with a better quality brush pen or a travel brush, which is saddening to hear as the paint set is called the brush pen set I would recommend this set to students and beginners who want to paint while traveling.
