Flawless. That describes this new Brother HLL5100DN printer. The unit has a very quick start-up time, relatively quiet operation and great print quality. In addition to this, the DN in the name designates this as a duplex and networking printer. The unit features an Ethernet port and USB, and its built in duplexer prints double-sided without adding much time to the print job. Unlike other printers in this price range, the 5100DN also features a display for status messages and a variety of keys for option programming. Most printers in this price range just have a basic error light, so having quick access to problem messages is great. In a small to medium business or busy home, this printer will be a perfect addition. Toner is relatively cheap, and the paper tray has dual media option, for regular sheets, and envelopes.

I wont go into every minutiae, as many have already done so. This is mostly about print quality (which, oddly enough, is rarely mentioned). The quality of the print, especially compared to the likes of Xerox Phaser or HP, etc., is just plain terrible. If anything, its certainly not the 1200x1200 DPI they claim it to be. Its not even 600x600 in my opinion. Id place it more at about 300x600. This deception in marketing alone is what earned it a two star rating from me (sorry, but print quality is a deal breaker for me). Print speed is indeed fast, even from a deep sleep. If youre able to get it at a lower price (it was just down to $115) and just need a cheap and fast machine for invoicing and student use, it might suit your needs. Pros: - Cost effective - Prints crisply - Easy to get up and running Cons: - Cant print large amounts of envelopes quickly Beware of overheating when printing envelopes. I was trying to print 300 envelopes and every 10-20 it would stop for a few minutes to cool down.

I have only had this printer for one year and it is barely printing anymore. It has black ink spots all over the pages, the page numbers on the bottom of the page are not printing and there is black ink all along the side of the page. I have been trying to go through support and I have tried cleaning every different part. Nothing has helped. I am so frustrated!

This has been our go to printer for the office. It prints on both sides, is fast, connects to the network, and generally runs without any problems. Best of all, there are many options online for replacing the toner cartridge. I would highly recommend for any small office environment.

We have several of these printers at the office and at home and I have been using them for years. They simply work and thats it. Nothing complicated.
