> 3 dayId tried the Canson Montaval for testing and scrap and it was okay, but I saw some negative reviews and on YouTube, I saw this XL stuff in many studios. I didnt like the Montaval, but I cant find much use for the XL at all. Im using it up for sketches, but this stuff makes the Montaval look like arches or W&N paper. Yes its cellulose, and yes people on YT paint on this (dry paint, I imagine), but I wouldnt get another to use as birdcage liner. What is this? To be fair and earn the one star, you CAN use very dry paint on dry XL with one layer. I tried a colorful chicken, and as long as the paint didnt touch any other paint, ...well, notebook paper would be just as good. Thats how I use it: swipe barely-damp paint near others to use as a color study. You cant scrub it of course. I have no idea how the YT users paint on this stuff! I half-suspect they swap out the XL for a cotton paper. For future reference, Im getting more of the Montaval for color studies. I have a whole stack of this now that Im using for graphite and charcoal, and its just not even US $1. Avoid.

> 3 dayI purchased this paper for my Girl Scout troop. We used it with the liquid water colors and it was a great project. This nice paper made a huge difference with the water colors. It absorbs quickly so the colors don’t run.

> 3 dayReally happy with this purchase as a beginner to watercolor painting. In the end, I went with 4 stars simply because its not without flaw. But I would be amazed if you could find a better paper for this price and without wanting to invest a lot into a new hobby, it is perfect for my need. Edit: Increased the rating to 5 stars as I have learned the bubbling problem is due to me not wetting the paper prior to painting. Once doing this, the bubbling became so much less severe that any flaws are meaningless when considering this price point. Definitely recommend this paper! Pros: 1. Bright, white color to the paper. 2. Absorbancy seems on par with what I expected it would be. 3. Bleeding was nearly non-existent and the paint stayed where I placed it. 4. Pleasant matte texture per standard watercolor paper. Cons: 1. The bubble/warp issue. This is probably my fault, but I didnt feel I was even using that much water. It settled down after it dried, but the massive bubbles while I was painting made it hard to do straight lines and get even coverage. 2. The cover of the pad was glued slightly askew so the edges of the paper are exposed in one corner.

Greater than one weekGreat for the beginner or pro . Inexpensive enough to do lots of practice and heavy enough to not buckle too much. Depending what paints you use the paper will show colors nice . Hold lines and can take lots of washes and abuse ,like scrubbing .dosent yellow or fade out colors .

> 3 dayGreat paper for a few thin layers of water color. It will buckle some if too heavily saturated, to solve that I work in thin layers allowing it to dry completely before coming back to add other touches. The perforations are a bit deep if thats the correct way to explain it, the pages will come out easy, which works for me since I did not intend to store the art pieces in the notepad. In the rating features, for beginners I do give 5 stars because it is a good heavy weight paper that makes painting with watercolor easier and less frustrating than going with a cheaper off brand. I was introduced to watercolor on inferiors paper, which was not the way to go. I thought I hated watercolor, when in fact it was the bad paper that made it difficult. So when helping my kids explore art we always go for Canson or Strathmore. Not necessarily professional grade, but a fantastic intermediate quality paper.

> 3 dayReally nice thick paper for watercoloring. I was able to get some really nice gradient washes. I also cut this up into smaller test pieces and was able to do practice paintings on both sides it was so thick! As a beginner, I thought this was a great value to be introduced to some nice watercolor paper.

> 3 dayCanson XL pad is a great and affordable option, I plan to use when making cards using stamps and watercolor. I dont want to use expensive watercolor paper on a card because I know some people dont save their cards. My first Canson XL pad had the cover and cardboard completely separated from the paper along with a long tear along the spine in shipment because it was just bouncing around in the box with my other items. The process for a replacement with Amazon was easy and the replacement came in a bubble envelope with a barely noticeable dented corner.
