Note: I purchased this set from Amazon.ca and is a Verified Purchase there. Since I use and order from both Amazon sites, I am also posting my review here :-) Derwent Drawing Pencils are creamy, rich coloured pencils with a dreamy colour palate suitable for landscapes- nature studies, wildlife studies and portraiture. I had originally purchased the 6 pc set, just to try them out. Due to some of the issues I had experienced with the Coloursoft coloured pencils, I did not want to splurge on these just yet. Almost immediately I fell in love with them. These are richly pigmented, and when creating the swatches I knew I had to upgrade. The colours offered here in the 24 pc set (their largest) are gorgeous, earthy tones, and the performance of these pencils are outstanding. Rich pigments, vibrant colours that layer and blend exquisitely. Like the Coloursoft, and the Artists pencils, these barrels are thick, and the 5mm lead allows for a lot of pigment on that lay-down. The issues are minimal. Price - these are expensive. The prices here on Amazon are the best I was able to find and these pencils are worth the asking price. Another minor negative is the thickness of the pencils may get in the way when colouring in, or drawing the tiny details in your pieces. Also their largest set of 24 colours may be limiting to some, and although the colours offered here are just what’s needed for nature and animal studies, you may still be yearning for more colour options. These are meant to be more of a companion piece to your other Derwent pencils; Coloursoft, Artists, ProColour, so for further colour options, just reach for whatever set you have. Currently I own the Coloursoft (36), Studio (36), and Artists (72). The Drawing pencils are my favourite so far of the Derwent line. Overall, Derwent Drawing Coloured pencils are fantastic. The 24 pc set is what is recommended as you get the full colour palette in a convenient tin. These are my go to pencils whenever I want to draw anything with four legs and is covered in fur, and those soft, dreamy landscapes. Although these may not be the best pencils for colouring books due to their theme specific colour selection, they perform beautifully, laying down gorgeous and saturated colours, and is recommended for artists of all levels.

Ive been drawing for about a year now, and have worked my way through a lot of media to figure out what I like working with. Recently Ive starting using FC Polychromos colored pencils, which (as pretty much anyone will tell you) are amazing. My only real beef with them is that the color range tends towards a lot of high-chroma colors--meaning that (so far as I know, anyway) if youre going for a natural or muted look you end up spending more time and material greying/toning down. These pencils work well as an adjunct to the Polychromos line. The colors are all soft and muted, and theyre so smooth and creamy that Ive been using them basically like a colored blender: I can lay down more vivid and defined color with the FCs, and then soften and blend with these. I cant tell if theyre all wax or an oil/wax blend, but they almost feel like a pencil version of a firm oil pastel (see, eg, Caran Dache Neocolor I). Anyway, highly recommended. Probably would work similarly well with Derwents other wax-based lines like Coloursoft. And Amazon sells the set for half of what they go for at Blick.

I love the succulent texture of these pencils for blending. Fantastic pencils but why do you call them Drawing pencils when they are colored pencils?

The colors are definitely geared toward nature and landscapes, and how wonderful it is to know that EACH pencil is lightfast!! Although they are called drawing pencils, they blend beautifully with traditional colored pencil, both oil-based and wax-based. Using odorless mineral spirits is not a problem and you will find that the white pencil is one of the most opaque, right up there with Prismacolor and Luminance whites. On the downside there are only 24 colors and the pencil will not sharpen to a fine point. These pencils are not for fine detailing---but considering the lightfastness and the natural colors, they are most definitely a great buy!.

LOVE, Best colours for animals and just the right shades. Just wish they were softer, they are closer to the Artist line but I like the Coloursoft line more. Very good pencils, I also have the inktense and watercolour lines, and the graphite, charocal, just the all the derwents!!! ALSO LOOOVE these and got the set for around $65, the DERWENT coloursoft colour pencils, also love the inktense

Beautiful natural looking colors! Its sometimes hard to find the right color to use for rendering natural scenes in artwork. A lot of colored pencil brands have greens and browns that are not found in nature and two or more colors have to be used to find the correct effect. These are the best I have found. They are a dream to work with, have a creamy smooth lay down and are easily blended.

The pencils are fine but I paid for the metal case so it wouldve been nice to actually receive the lid.
