Phil the Lego Nerd
> 3 dayLego nerd, college student, and die-hard Harry Potter fan here. I cannot recommend this set enough. When my 9 year old cousin and I first found out that Lego was releasing a Hogwarts Great Hall, neither of us could contain our excitement. The build took about 1.5 hours. Now that we’ve built the set, played with it, and he’s destroyed it, here are our pros and cons. Pros: This set’s sheer level of detailing is simply fantastic and the set looks great on display. In person, the minarets, rooftops and triangle shapes of the exterior really stand out. The pieces in the set themselves are very versatile, and half of the fun for my cousin was making his own creations after we finished building (he particularly enjoyed the yellow frog piece). The figures are another highlight. My cousin really like swooshing around the exclusive Nearly Headless Nick (whose head stays firmly on his neck in Lego form unlike in the films and who features both a happy and sad face.) Hagrid has a newly molded body as well. His ams stay firmly in their sockets and never pop out. Susan Bones, Nearly Headless Nick, Professor Quirell, Ron and Draco (in their respective Hogwarts robes) are exclusive to this set, as are McGonagall and this version of Dumbledore for now (this will change later this year). They feature double-sided head printing other than Hagrid as seen in my photos. Quirell also features Voldemort’s face on his back which is intimidating and very well done. This set is currently the only way to get Slytherin and Hufflepuff robes. The new Sorting Hat piece is also exceptionally detailed and is probably my favorite new part of the year. The boat is a nice inclusion as well. Cons: There aren’t many cons of this set. Notably, the brick built Basilisk and Fawks do look clunky in person, and I’m honestly not a fan. Also, the set connects poorly with the Whomping Willow set (75953) in that it becomes impossible to fully extend the stairs. Though the great hall is very well detailed Lego could have done a better job hiding the massive and very visible technic piece going down the center of the hall’s ceiling. At 11.4 cents per piece, this set is slightly more expensive than I’d like, but considering the sheer amount detailing and figures, this can be forgiven. Though the figures are amazing, Professor McGonagalls second face peeks out from under her hat (as seen in my photo). Finally, there are a maddening amount of stickers used in this set, and once applied incorrectly, they become almost impossible to remove. I wish Lego would just print the designs onto the parts as in the old days. These gripe aside, this is a fantastic set and I could not recommend it more.
