Merriam-Webster’s Elementary Dictionary

A quality dictionary for my 8 1/2-year-old granddaughter who is interested in the origins of words. Great training for learning how to do research. The encyclopedia is next on my list.

I love the book. I used it to teach my daughter how to use a dictionary and now when she does not know the meaning of word she can go and find it in the book. I know she can use online dictation but I believe this way teachers her more words.

This dictionary is very comprehensive, easy to navigate and very sturdy. Many of the pages have illustrations which help kids to visualize the meaning of the word as well. I would definitely recommend it.

I bought this children’s dictionary for my kids. I always had encyclopedia and dictionaries in my house when I was growing up. Everytime my kids ask me what a word means or read books and doesn’t know what a word mean I tell them to look it up just like my mom told me before the Internet and cellphone were popular. I will order another advanced dictionary for bigger words so that my kid’s vocabulary can increase each grade level.

This dictionary is a hardcover. The book is a nice size and gas weight to it. I dont know why that thought it was acceptable to package this item in a bag for delivery with no padding or Cushion. My daughters book arrived damaged, which over rime will become worse. After a brief skim, I like the way dictionary is set up. A great addition to my daughters bookcase.

Sent this to my niece and she seriously had no intentions of using it. Just commented that her teacher had one just like it. My sister had her use it while writing a paper. Glad to report its helped so much that my sister noticed shed been packing it in her bookbag. Love that shes not only seeing proper spelling of words (which she struggles with) but also tense and synonyms. Id love to know why using a dictionary isnt taught or recommended in grade school, but in the meantime, im on a hunt for something pocket sized for that bookbag.

It is well organized and easy for kids to use. My daughter loves looking at the pictures. But there are words missing that you would expect in a childrens dictionary. Why isnt the word leprechaun in there?

The book is in a very good condition!

My daughter (7 years old) loves reading this. Sometimes she’ll sneak it to bed with her or get up and grab it. I can think of much worse things to get frustrated about. Rate it between easy and moderate. Depends on the person.

Got tired of kids asking what does this mean. My moms response was always, look in the dictionary. So, got this dictionary and it is great for them to locate the words pretty easily. Great illustrations, includes the root words and info on where the word originated.
