> 24 hourI tried Purigen for the first time in a new canister filter. I had it recommended to me more than once by my local fish store and by other fishkeepers on the Internet. So, I figured since I was setting up a canister on my 55-gallon cichlid tank I may as well throw a bag of Purigen and give it a try. Im quite pleased. The bag is incredibly fine mesh but it seems as though this one (as opposed to Seachems The Bag) is not reusable. Its welded shut and does not seem as though its able to be opened or resealable. It has a very odd, very fishy odor which immediately attracted the attention of my cats. I had another bag sitting out and one of my cats must have thought it was a bag of treats and ripped right into it. Its an odd thing, but I guess keep that in mind if you have animals that might be attracted to a fishy smell - keep it hidden until ready for use. Having said all of that the stuff works great! Once my filter started to establish itself after about a week or so I noticed a lot of clearing of small particulates and noticed a drop in overall nitrate levels. My cichlid tank is moderately planted so I want to keep nitrate levels relatively high to facilitate fertilization but I can tell that the Purigen definitely helps reduce organic waste breakdown from things like dead leaves. Ive heard great success stories with Purigen also removing tannins from driftwoods. Fortunately all my wood has been soaked for years so I have no experience there but I dont doubt the claims are accurate. Purigen will find its way into all my setups from here on out.

> 24 hourOooh! The progress! I have a wee 10 gallon with a large piece of wood and I forgot about tannins. My water had been brown! You dont notice as much when the lights were on, but it was gross to look at. So, I got this, did a water change and now my water is almost clear! Im really happy with this and excited for my clear water.

> 24 hourThis stuff is magic - I bought both a Purigen pack and a ZooMed external filter for a nano tank I got for Christmas. The included tank filter required me to do daily water changes to keep the water from discoloring with just 1 tiny fish and 1 snail (and three healthy plants!). Within a couple of hours of stuffing the Purigen into the existing filter housing, the water I already changed partially earlier in the day drew to crystal clear, the fishs activity easily doubled, and the snail stopped napping for extended periods in between cruising around and instead started zooming all around the tank. Truly amazed, especially at the capacity, renewability and price. I wish I had heard of Purigen years ago!

> 24 hourI’ve been looking for something to get rid of the tannins in my tank due to a large piece of Mopani wood. I was doing ~70% water changes once a week to try and keep the water clear. I put the Purigen in my filter last night and 12 hours later my tank is CRYSTAL clear. Purigen is now a product that I’ll always have on hand.

> 24 hourI have not used a better product for maintaining aquarium water clarity. I have used this and reused this (you can regenerate rather than replacing) for about 18 months and I notice the difference each time I swap it out. I am running a Fluval 406 on a 54 gallon corner bowfront aquarium packed with bluegill, green sunfish, minnows, and crayfish. I maintain two of these packets, using one while regenerating the other (regeneration time is about one - two days, there are three steps). The packet slides down into the filter in the gap between the long filter sponges and the body - it does not take up much space and placing it there allows me to keep the gray baskets packed with filter media. I do the filter maintenance monthly and that is when I swap the packets. Within hours the difference in water clarity is noticeable.

> 24 hourI had recently set up a planted tank with a driftwood piece in it. No matter what I did I could not get the driftwood to come clean per the soaking and boiling methods so I ended up using in the tank anyway and tada, lots of tannins leached out. After about 3 weeks I really got tired of the brown water and bought some of this. Cleared the water in my 10 gallon in 4 hours! The water is crystal clear and finally looks like a nice tank! It came in it’s own little pouch that you put directly into your filter housing. I gave it a quick rinse and popped in the housing. Literally just set it and forget it. Super easy.

> 24 hourI have used Purigen for years and it works 10+x better than the best charcoal/carbon products that I have used. Although it is a bit of a pain to regenerate, I wait till I have 8 or more packets follow their directions, and for a couple of $ they are almost like new. I have done this a couple of times now and they still work. Warning !! Always use other seachem products with it especially water conditioners as some slime coat products will foul purigen lost a few packets that way. I like almost all their products any way. From their support forum: The problem with Purigen and slime coat products occurs in the regeneration of Purigen. After using bleach to remove the organics you then soak the Purigen in a dechlorinator to remove the chlorine bleach. Many companies that have a slime coat enhancer in their products use an amine based polymer. That amine can attach to the chlorine creating chloramine. Chloramine is rather stable and can kill your fish when added to the aquarium. A product such as Prime or ChlorGuard will remove the chlorine and does not have any amine based polymer.

> 24 hourPicked a few of these up when my nitrates started to go out of whack. Definitely rinse before using!! I didnt thoroughly rinse the first one, so the water flow blew a lot of micro pellets into the tank. Whoops. The second packet got more attention and the issue was resolved.
