I have a Fluval Spec 3 with a relatively large piece of driftwood. I boiled the driftwood for over an hour and soaked it for 2 months and yet it still releases tannins. The Spec came with Carbon and that seemed to take out some of the tannins but slowly the water was still turning tea colored. Based upon reviews that Purigen removed all that stuff I took the plunge. I will say that the product does what it says it will do and the water is much much cleaner. If the tank has a black background and the lights are on I cant see any tinting. If the background is white or if the lights are off the water does look stained. Since this is a pack for up to 100 gallon tanks and I have a 3 gallon Im guessing this will last an incredibly long time. Im not sure Ill try to recharge it since the cost is minimal. In any case Id buy this product again. Pros: Staining from tannins is greatly reduced Cons: Not a miracle worker. TLDR: Water still stained but would buy again.

I have replaced my carbon with Purigen in all of my aquariums (salt and fresh). This is supposed to last for about 6 months in an aquarium, then it can be recharged with chlorine and reused. It is very fine, so I use knee high pantyhose (new) to cut out the feet and use them for filter socks. Fine filter bags might have holes too wide to contain the tiny purigen balls. So pantyhose is definately a more economical filter sock. This has definately helped with all of my tanks. The only downside is that if you use some slimecoat products it can ruin the purigen in such that it cant be recharged. When this stuff fails to recharge, I will definately order more. Its much cheaper than carbon and doesnt release chemicals into the water after 30 days like carbon.

If you’re unsure or Skeptical about Purigen as I was before buying this product, don’t be, this stuff works. I run a Fluval FX6 filter on my 120 gallon Discus tank and wanted that Crystal clear water and Purigen provided. I was actually stunned at how clear my water turned out. Just keep in mind you have to keep a well maintained aquarium for these results, but it’s worth it. I will not be without Purigen from now on. Great Product Seachem!!

My first purchase of the bag with the purigen was great, however this new bag broke open at the seam after a week of use. Luckily I noticed the little beads before I hooked my filter back up. I tried to melt the bag back together but it did not work. Luckily I had some zip ties to close the bag back up. The product however does seem to work well. I have two turtles in a 55 gallon tank, with a Sun Sun canister filter, and put the purigen in the top basket. My original bag turned tea colored brown in about 3 months, so I ordered another bag as a back up for when Im recharging. The recharging for me also took two soaks in bleach to get the bag back to its original color.

I used three of these in three different aquariums: a 5.5, 29 and 55 gallon. After checking packets seams for seals (all the bags were intact and great welds) and rinsing the packets I placed them in the aquariums. The fish responded fairly rapidly and excitedly as the Purigen went to work. Within an hour I could see more clarity in the water, and the fish had all calmed down after their excitement. 24 hours later I checked to see if any fish had died. All appeared healthy and normal. My 5.5 aquarium houses ghost shrimp and African dwarf frogs and they were never phased by the addition of the Purigen. Water appears excellent across all the tanks and any odor has been removed from the tanks. I would say a resounding success! I will try to recharge in the future and see how that goes. Wish I had tried this sooner!

Ive used Purigen before but read a review that gave me pause. Fake Purigen a reviewer believed. Bag size was an issue. I purchased it anyway and did a little looking around for video reviews that were recent. Yes the bag is longer in the videos, with a seam down the middle, so I feel what I bought is the real thing. It is in my tank now, and everything seems normal. I guess when I check on the bag to see if it gets discolored, and test my water, I will know if there is such a thing as fake Purigen. I really saw nothing on the Seachem website regarding packaging, but from the videos I saw, I guess they changed the bag. I like the product. Time will tell.

Cleared all the tannins out of my tank in a matter of days but for me it only lasted maybe 2-3 weeks tops before I had to replace with new purigen. I would say it’s great if you just need to clear up some tannins from new driftwood but might not be the best for long term use unless your willing to go through the process of ‘recharging’ the purigen as other reviewers have mentioned

After battling nitrate and I tried in my saltwater aquarium, I came across this product hanging on the shelf of my local fish store. Curious I came home and looked it up on Amazon. It had fabulous reviews and so I was instantly curious. I ordered it and it arrived promptly the next day well packaged with clear instructions. I placed it in the bottom of my canister filter. Within 48 hours my nitrate level had gone to zero and nitrites were barely detectable. The product itself does not neutralize nitrates or nitrites but it binds to the biological materials that break down causing nitrates and nitrites to rise in the tank. Equally impressive my water clarity is amazing. Sparkly and clear. Highly recommended!

    Greater than one week

I purchased this product based primarily on reviews posted here and around the internet and based on my respect for the Seachem brand in general. I had my doubts that it would really help get rid of the tea water in my aquarium. Needless to say, I now recommend this for any aquarist that is considering adding driftwood (especially mopani!) to their tanks and does not want a blackwater look. I added the Purigen media bag inside my Quietflow 50 filter in the space behind the normal filter pad. Within 24 hours my water looked as good as anything that comes out of our tap and the white Purigen had turned brown. The color of my fish looks so much better and the whole setup finally looks clean again. I cant comment on the ability to recharge the product for re-use since I just got it but for the price Im willing to buy more if that doesnt work as advertised. Another great product from Seachem, another happy fishkeeper!

I have a 40 gallon long planted tank and had quite a problem with green slime algae. I purchased Purigen, but in the bulk bottle, and it fixed my high nitrate problem. The product worked well but the bag I bought allowed some of the small particles to fall out (even though it was rated to handle the tiny particles). I bought this one and love how easy it is to use and recharge. The 100 ml Purigen is contained in a small bag which fits perfectly in my Fluval Canister filter. I do use 2 bags in my canister and have to recharge it every 2 weeks but recharging is easy. Using diluted bleach and then recharging it with the Seachem Prime, Ive never had any problems and have used this product for over a year now.

Seachem Purigen is not a mixture of ion exchangers or adsorbents, but a unique macro-porous synthetic polymer that removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water at an excelled rate and capacity.
