> 3 dayI was recommended to use Purigen in my 38-gallon all-in-one reef tank in place of the stock sponges (physical/carbon/phosphate) that came with the tank and were relatively expensive to replace. Two packets came in the bag and there was also refreshing instructions. While the life of this product in the tank will vary depending on the environmental and feeding conditions, Ive noticed that it seems to last a few months in my tank before it needs to be replaced. How do I know it needs to be replaced? Because I started to notice the green dusty algae/diatoms on the glass. When the Purigen is fresh, it works very well. The product starts out an off-white color and gets consistently more tan as it ages in the tank. When its not working like it should, I follow the refreshing instructions (utilize chlorine bleach and then Prime (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00025694O/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_27)) and switch to my other bag of Purigen. Ive been very impressed with the results and the net cost of using the product for the past year. As a side note, I utilize the inTank acrylic media basket for the Purigen pack and it fits perfectly for the 30/38-gallon media basket model (also purchased from Amazon).

> 3 dayPleased with how well Purigen works. Highly recommended. Before pictures are prior to adding. After pictures are from four day later with the Purigen. I have one bag in my hob filter for 125g.

Greater than one weekReally made a huge difference with my Axolotl tank. I have 2 HOBS and put this in one and next day crystal clear water and it’s staying that way. This is one of the best aquarium products I’ve purchased. Will buy again.

Greater than one weekI have been using this for months, I would suggest buying two. That way you can put one in filter while you are giving other a chlorine bath to refresh it. It works great to pull tannins out and other polluting items.

Greater than one weekWood roots in discus tank eventually leach tannins. Even after boiling multiple times. So adding this to my filter media works amazingly.

> 3 dayWell, this is one of the best things ive stumbled across by way of polishing the water in my 54 gallon Discus tank. I use 2 100ml pouches in the top tray in an Eheim 2074 Pro3e filter, on top of recently added Biohome biological media. I have driftwood and it really holds the tannins at bay. I took out the Purigen for a month after i thought the driftwood was done leeching after a year in the tank, but in a month the water was darker. After 3 days back with Purigen again and wow! And the fish act noticably healthier with it. Interestingly I have not had an effect on nitrates at all. Im using a litre of Seahem matrix in the bottom tray of said filter, and a litre of Seachem De-nitrate in a reactor, but my nitrates still climbed 2 ppm a day, until recently. (And Biohome in the second tray.) Nitrates have finally stabilized and do not climb which is good and what im after. Im not sure what is holding the nitrates in check but it is probably the Biohome and/or De-nitrate doing most of the trick. These were added at the same time in my desperation to curb nitrates. Yeah, i tried Algone but i got nothing out of it. Btw, I seeded the reactor with Seachem Stabilty. Im hitting the nitrates from all angles, because carrying 5 gallon buckets of RO water up the basement stairs was getting tiring for weekly water changes. Well water is pH 9 and 540 TDS - too hard to use, hence usage of RO water. I have a high bio-load via feeding the fish frozen beefheart, frozen blood worms and brine shrimp 3x a day, plus (5) 5-6 inch discus and may other tank mates: 2 rams, 6 tetras 1 shark, and a betta. I think it is a win win situation with Purigen. Not only can you see the difference, but you can literally see it load up with waste and you know it is spent, unlike carbon which tells you nothing here.

> 3 dayBest chemical media on the market. The fact that you can easily recharge it with bleach is definitely a bonus. Only 4 stars due to the bags splitting at the seams. Had to buy some aftermarket bags to put the Purigen in due to this.

09-06-2025Those stubborn nitrates were rising and I tried so many things. I didnt know about cycling my tank and my turtles were suffering in the waiting process. This stuff is amazing. The nitrate level went down almost completely in two days and still lowering. I cant recommend this enough for turtle keepers.

10-06-2025This stuff is absolutely excellent. It fits perfectly in my Aquaclear 20 HOB filter and gave me crystal clear water 24 hours after inserting it. I will come back to update my review after I try to regenerate it but it does claim to last a long time before this needs to be done so I will review that as well. The bag it comes in is great and sturdy as well but the seams WILL pop if you handle it too rough. Luckily I was easily able to seal right back up with my vacuum sealer but everyone may not have this luxury. EDIT: 4/18/2017- I regenerated Purigen for the first time, and my packet came out looking absolutely snow white after following the directions! Really amazed how simple it was and how disgusting the beads had gotten. Really shows you how much this stuff works.
