> 3 dayRecently discovered this Purigen stuff from online discussions because I always seemed to have nitrate problems. Upon using Purigen I notice my nitrates are almost non-existent! But this is also in part that I do frequent water changes and make sure to vacuum the substrate. I can see how this Purigen will help you reduce frequent water changes if your tank is not overstocked. But if you do have an overstocked tank, definitely use this stuff & keep up your regular maintenance if you want your fish to thrive for the long run :) My fish are doing friggin awesome thanks to this stuff, I highly recommend it. Thanks Seachem for inventing such an amazing product.

> 3 dayI have two pieces of driftwood in my 9 gallon Eheim Aquastyle. Even after boiling the wood repeatedly and letting it soak for over two weeks, my tank water looked like iced tea. Within 24 hours of putting Purigen in my filter, the water was crystal clear. That was two months ago, and today I took the bag out of the filter to re-charge it. The Purigen was a very dark brown and is soaking in bleach as I write this, and it is turning white again. My tank is dirted, and I have many plants in it. The Purigen had no adverse affect on my plants (or my fish, shrimp, and snails). For Aquastyle owners, I was worried that the Purigen wouldnt fit in my tanks filter, but it did after I cut the filter sponge lengthwise to make it much slimmer. I also own a Fluval Spec III. I put Purigen in its sponge filter in the spot where the charcoal bag would go. Just fold the Purigen over in half and pop it in. I love this stuff! UPDATE: I recharged the Purigen without any problems. I let it soak in 100% bleach for about 12 hours because I didnt read the directions properly about soaking it in a 1:1 bleach/water solution. Afterwards, I soaked it for about 18 hours or so in tap water and added Seachem Prime dechlorinator. It is back in my tank. Flora and fauna are fine, and water is clear.

> 3 dayI absolutely love this product! It works miracles on my tanks. I have two heavily stocked tanks. Yes, I committed the ultimate no, no. I proactively ordered Purigen so that I could have it on hand when needed. Well... the time came... Something went awry with my 5 gallon tank and I lost two ghost shrimp and a cory cat within a few days. These die offs most likely created an ammonia spike and the remaining fish were feeling it. One of my mollies kept brushing against the plants in the tank. I tested the water and the ammonia was in the stress range. I broke out my new bag of Purigen, read the directions and then inserted it on top of my filter where water would flow through it. Within just 10 or so minutes. The mollie was no longer brushing up against the plants. The next day when I got up and looked at the tank, the water was crystal clear and all fish were swimming actively. About a week later, my 10 gallon tank started to get a yellow-green dingy appearance. I smelled the water and it had a bad odor. The fish were barely swimming... it seemed as though they were feeling the effects of the dirty water. I put the bag of Purigen from my 5 gallon tank into my 10 gallon tank and bam! It seemed like within only 10 or 15 minutes the fish started getting livelier. The next morning, the 10 gallon tank was crystal clear. In fact it looks as good as the first day I filled it with water if not better. I should have taken a before and after picture of my tank, but didnt think of it. I did take a picture a couple days after I added the Purigen, and have attached it to this review. Apologies for the poor quality of the picture as I took it with a cheap cell phone. :) In addition, I attached a picture of where I inserted the bag of Purigen. I thought this would be helpful because I had no idea where to install the bag before I started using the product. If it wasnt for other reviewers and individuals answering questions about where to insert the bag, I would have been totally lost. So, hopefully this will help others to understand where to install it. Other reviewers communicated that you can even leave it floating freely in your tank. This works too-Ive tried it. You dont need a special filter set-up or compartment in your filter. In my tanks, I generally tuck it underneath the plastic grid in my filter and it holds it in place so it doesnt float away. The water coming out of the filter washes through the bag of Purigen. I have several tanks and am going to purchase a couple more bags of this Purigen. I want it in all my larger tanks so that I dont have to be concerned with bi-weekly chemical checks. My aquariums are all fairly new and they have been going through a lot of changes as of late. I guess the pros call it cycling. This Purigen really eases the water chemistry and brings everything into perfect balance and a peaceful calm for my fish. I would definitely recommend this product as it works miracles in my aquariums and relieves stress for fish and fish keepers!

> 3 dayBest chemical media on the market. The fact that you can easily recharge it with bleach is definitely a bonus. Only 4 stars due to the bags splitting at the seams. Had to buy some aftermarket bags to put the Purigen in due to this.

> 3 dayI have a 65 gallon tank with a RES turtle and another 20 gallon with a young axolotl. Was having problems with cloudiness in the 20 gal and this stuff cleared it up in a couple days. Its ridiculously clear now. Decided to put some in the turtle filter too and I thought that tank was clear before but wow the water is literally completely see thru now. I tried multiple fixes with the 20 gal so I know this product was the solution. If youre having problems with cloudy water, get this.

> 3 dayMy high bio load (4 small fish, 1 aquatic frog, ~10 red cherry shrimp) was really overwhelming the chemistry of my little 5 G aquarium. I was doing 40% water changes every Sunday, yet the nitrates would always be close to 80 ppm by the following Saturday. I switched out my carbon filter for one of these Purigen bags, did a 40% water change, and a week later, the nitrates were below 5 ppm (without any spikes in NH3 or nitrite). This product really leveled out the previously out-of-control nitrogen cycle in my tank. My only complaint is that they dont sell this in smaller bags. My love for my fish isnt measured by the size of their tank! SeaChems smallest size of 100 mL is really overkill for an aquarium of this size, and it was a little difficult to fit into the filter compartment.

> 3 dayI had recently set up a planted tank with a driftwood piece in it. No matter what I did I could not get the driftwood to come clean per the soaking and boiling methods so I ended up using in the tank anyway and tada, lots of tannins leached out. After about 3 weeks I really got tired of the brown water and bought some of this. Cleared the water in my 10 gallon in 4 hours! The water is crystal clear and finally looks like a nice tank! It came in it’s own little pouch that you put directly into your filter housing. I gave it a quick rinse and popped in the housing. Literally just set it and forget it. Super easy.

> 3 dayI tried Purigen for the first time in a new canister filter. I had it recommended to me more than once by my local fish store and by other fishkeepers on the Internet. So, I figured since I was setting up a canister on my 55-gallon cichlid tank I may as well throw a bag of Purigen and give it a try. Im quite pleased. The bag is incredibly fine mesh but it seems as though this one (as opposed to Seachems The Bag) is not reusable. Its welded shut and does not seem as though its able to be opened or resealable. It has a very odd, very fishy odor which immediately attracted the attention of my cats. I had another bag sitting out and one of my cats must have thought it was a bag of treats and ripped right into it. Its an odd thing, but I guess keep that in mind if you have animals that might be attracted to a fishy smell - keep it hidden until ready for use. Having said all of that the stuff works great! Once my filter started to establish itself after about a week or so I noticed a lot of clearing of small particulates and noticed a drop in overall nitrate levels. My cichlid tank is moderately planted so I want to keep nitrate levels relatively high to facilitate fertilization but I can tell that the Purigen definitely helps reduce organic waste breakdown from things like dead leaves. Ive heard great success stories with Purigen also removing tannins from driftwoods. Fortunately all my wood has been soaked for years so I have no experience there but I dont doubt the claims are accurate. Purigen will find its way into all my setups from here on out.

Greater than one weekI didnt have noticeable water visibility issues before hand but was looking for something more effective than carbon at removing wastes. My water parameters in my 10 gallon were good before (2 African dwarf frogs, 3 male guppies, a handful of ghost shrimp), are consistently perfect now with a 20% water change each week. Ammonia, 0ppm, Nitrite, 0pm, Nitrate 10ppm. But the clarity of the water is amazing, even when I didnt see anything wrong with it beforehand. Prior to moving, I kept the tank in a wall cut out , so you could see the room behind it; It look liked my critters were swimming in the air between the two rooms. I use an AquaClear 20 filter and just substituted the charcoal bag with the Purigen bag, which fit very nicely. Cant imagine having a tank without it now.

> 3 dayThis stuff is amazing. I dropped it into the filter of a tank that had some driftwood in it. Beforehand the water was tea colored from the driftwood. Overnight all the tannins were gone and the water was crystal clear. I then dropped it into the filter of a tank it was having an algae bloom (the water was turning murky green) and within about two days the Purigen bag was bright green but there was no trace of algae left in the tank. I followed the directions on the website to clean and recharge it and it worked perfectly. Note that if you do try to clean it with bleach you have to use the Prime product to soak it in afterwords to remove all the chlorine before putting it back into the tank. Im definitely sold on Purigen.
