Great lens!

Amazing

I use this lens for surf photography and it is very nice for the price. Of course, a 600mm f/4 would produce better pictures but there is something to be said for having a fairly compact and mobile lens you can walk around the beach with without thinking about a large tripod etc. Pictures are sharp and the autofocus has no issue on a canon 5d mark iii---recommended.

Had been planning to buy a super telephoto lens for longtime. Initially thought I would get this from the US as the price looked too high on the Indian site. However, this discount made the deal pretty sweet and hence ordered it here itself. The lens came with a hood and bag to carry the lens which I did not expect. The bag is of really good quality from Sigma itself.

This lens is the good news to wildlife photographers who dont have a high budget.

Nun habe ich schon viele Bilder mit dem Objektiv gemacht. Mein altes 70-300 habe ich verkauft, es war nicht schlecht (kompakt und relativ leicht, optisch super, Nachtrag: Ich hätte es behalten sollen, weil es leichter und kleiner ist, die Kanone ist nicht immer nötig und sinnvoll). 600 mm sind aber einfach deutlich mehr. Wenn man Tiere fotografiert, egal ob im Zoo oder in freier Wildbahn, macht sich das deutlich bemerkbar. Die Optik liefert scharfe Bilder (ganz teure Objektive sind da besser, aber finanziell und vom Gewicht her kaum tragbar). Der Bildstabilisator arbeitet sehr gut und gleicht die geringe Lichtstärke zum Teil aus. Das Objektiv ist für mich noch tragbar (Gewicht und Preis). Details sind sehr durchdacht, z.B. kann die Objektivschelle sich nicht versehentlich lösen. An der Schelle kann ein mitgelieferter Trageriemen befestigt werden. Die Brennweite kann bei vorgegebenen Werten fixiert werden, Der Autofocusbereich kann begrenzt werden.

I had high hopes for this lens, but even shooting fixed objects on a tripod with remote shutter release to reduce vibration to the absolute minimum, in every mode I could think of (fully automatic, various basic and creative modes) and with autofocus and OS on, it fails to deliver a crisp image at any distance within the field of view. Things are recognizable but just not nearly as sharp as they should be, certainly not enough to stand any magnification. Ive run it through the Dock without seeing any improvement. In manual focus mode, the difference between far under-range and far over-range is a tiny motion of the ring, and the ring itself is jumpy - it binds and then jerks, making precise focusing impossible. This has been reported by others and a partial work-around is to touch the ring as lightly as you can while still being able to move it; a normal grip pinches something and causes the binding behavior to be much worse. To sum up, Ive seen a lot of gorgeous pictures that other people have taken with this lens, but mine certainly isnt up to snuff. There appear to be good and bad production lenses so maybe I just got one of the mediocre ones, but to all thinking of buying this lens, Id say approach it with caution.

Early days but so far so good. Strong tripod is essential and that is my next upgrade.
