The tiny pans will fall out unless you glue them in, so not really practical for field use. Good quality.

I recently had bought the Winsor & Newton Cotman Brush Pen Set for my birthday last month and so far I had encounter some problems but overall I really liked this paint set. PROS: ◾Color Selection are great for mixing! I tend to mix pastel, bright or warm colors for my drawings and there wasnt any color which I felt was either unnecesarry or bad. ◾Good for Traveling, The size of this set easily fits into the small compartment infront of my bag! With a water brush and tissue paper you can easily paint your sketch and clean the paint on the mixing well with the tissue paper. ◾The Design of the set makes it so that the mixing wells stays flat while the paint is tilted forward to face you which makes it easier to see the paint when your using the paint set. ◾Removable Pans the pans are removable so if you dislike some colors or want to refill the empty pan you can easily switch it out. CONS: ◾The Brush Pen broke after I had only use it for a while. The stuff that was holding the brush in place broke off while I painting which ended up pushing the brush tip inside and I couldnt fix due to the brush pens design. ◾The Pans easily falls out of the palette but this is easily fixable with some blue tack. Overall, I really like the design and quality of the paint set but I do think that you should switch out the brush pen with a better quality brush pen or a travel brush, which is saddening to hear as the paint set is called the brush pen set I would recommend this set to students and beginners who want to paint while traveling.

I love the sturdy case, the paint quality is excellent, and the lid works well for mixing. I wanted to address the reviews that claim the water brush is poorly designed/leaky, etc. They are doing it wrong! The water brush has a cap which you KEEP so you can fill the brush and pack it into the palette. It doesn’t leak. You don’t have to bring water and fill it later. Fill it. Put the little black cap on. Pack it. To use it; remove the cap and attach the brush. No problems!

I (wife) have the Brush Pen Set and the Compact Set. I had the compact set first, but wanted a few more colors (beginner) and and to have a set portable enough for a road trip we are going on soon. I saw the brush pen set and loved it! The pen works well for my needs, the size of the palette is small for traveling but still has some mixing room, and I can bring a little recycled SweetLeaf sweetener squeeze bottle to refill the pen tube while away from home. Also grabbed a few other brush pens as well. Over all, loving it and the extra few colors. The Compact Set is decent. I don’t really use the thumb hole much myself, but someone else might. I would prefer more shades (b,w,g) be there, rather than 2 (different) yellows, 2 really similar oranges, and 3 different shades of brown. Black, white, and grey would be really useful on it. The water dish likes to fall off and doesn’t hardly hold much water. I use it as an extra mixing spot and leave it in its travel place. But over all it was a great starting point. If you are just starting out, I would go with the brush pen set and grab some extra brushes (I bought mine at Hobby Lobby on sale or Pentel on here for a water brush set), and maybe a white porcelain/ceramic dinner plate for mixing. Check Big Lots, it’s where I found mine for about $4. Watercolors like to bead up on plastic, so the plate is nice when painting at home. Overall, I’m loving my Cotman W&N watercolors!

The colors are beautiful, very pigmented considering the price, the color palette could be improved a little bit.

Pretty decent quality. I still prefer professional over Cotman, but the color payout is great for the price. My only qualm is with the Lemon Yellow Hue; it is far less pigmented and rich than the other colors (because it’s a hue), and I have used better Lemon Yellow Hues from other brands that are by no means as high esteemed as Windsor & Newton. Hence the 4 stars. But the quantity of paint is quite good and I believe this will last me awhile, even though I’ve been using it to paint 11x14 paintings, rather than solely as a travel kit.

These basic colors are more than enough for any artist. Be it a beginner or professional. This box is quite small.. So each color cube is really small. But bonus is the waterpen! I love using it. Overall, though its pricey, quality is awesome so go ahead and buy it!
