It throws sparks! Previously i used the 1/8th inch thick rods and this works so much better. If you are contemplating buying it, just do it. Ill try to add a video.

I love the size of the rod. Other rods are typically quite small and therefor can be quite challenging to strike. Especially if you are new to trying to light fires for survival training. Sometimes it can take upwards of 100 strikes to finally get a fire going and if the rod is small or hard to hold it can be more exhausting then it needs to be. This rod is large and easy to grip- there is plenty of room for striking. If youre new to trying to start fires this way, I HIGHLY encourage and recommend this one.
