If you only want one lens, make it this one. I got it yesterday and took it out for a test drive. It was an overcast day which can be a challenge for a long lens like this. Every photo I took, whether far off or the lens minimum distance, came out crisp and beautiful. It has good heft to it, which I would expect from a Canon lens, and doesnt feel cheap. The stabilization seems to work, although I havent played with it enough to know since Ive never owned a lens with SM. Auto focus is fast as I would expect.

A nice telephoto zoom like this can really boost the image quality you get out of a crop sensor camera. Ive owned a Rebel t4i for a few years and used all kinds of lenses. This new STM version is sharp, responsive and reliable. I plan to use it for videography, mostly interviews and some short films. I took it out for a spin and made this video with it.

Excellent lens for the price. Replaced my kit lens that got a bit sloppy after lots of use.

New ones are hard to come by, and are typically around $400, which is $100 more than what they were selling for a few months ago. Not sure if its Covid-related or a quality/defect issue, or both. I questioned why there are so many of these used (returned) lenses for sale. I should have listened to my gut instinct. The used descriptions tend to focus on physical condition, but none of that matters if it doesnt work correctly.

Hands down, my favorite telephoto lens for the price. I use it to photograph my horses and I dont have any trouble with getting clear action shots. This lens also gives me decent and clear photos in low light with a flash. Absolutely zero complaints.
