Garmin is evil. I signed up for an annual plan at $11.99 per month. After 6 months my car was broken into and my inReach stolen. I called Garmin and they say I still have to continue paying for my annual contract or I can cancel now, but I will have to pay the remaining contract balance.

Got his for my daughter to take on her 700 mile canoe trip on the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. We want her to be able to call help in an emergency, and we love tracking her progress on the website. She did a trip in the Boundary Waters last fall. One of her companions had one and it worked well and provided a margin of safety. I think it is indispensable for someone who is going to be out of cell phone range in the wilderness. If you dont need the topo and navigation you can save a lot by getting the SE model.

Love this device although it is important to note that you CANNOT load maps onto it like you can other Garmin devices. It has access to a lot of maps and detail from Garmin but if you want to load, say, a set of maps with snow mobile trails on it, you cant.

I ordered it after reading that it does marine maps. The marine maps only work on the phone app and not on this device.

I purchased the Garmin inReach Explorer+ with high hopes given the promised features of a GPS unit with two-messaging and personal locator beacon capabilities. All of that has been dashed over the last 5 months with attempts to use it in the backcountry associated with my biological research. I am a university biology professor who has been using Garmin GPS units in the field for the last 15 years. Heres the breakdown of my review so you can navigate quickly:

I like the capability to communicate anywhere and in emergency, you can send SOS. Keeping track of hiking routes is a bonus. Useful for navigation and tracking. Very satisfied with purchase.

I bought this product and will use it for trips to the BWCAW in northern MN. I use the device mostly for communication to the outside world that all is well and I have it just in case all is not well. My subscription is the most basic $16 a month freedom plan. I also used it for weather and for GPS capabilities as well.

From backcountry experiences to international adventures, inReach provides communication, location sharing, navigation and critical SOS functions for anyone who loves getting away from it all, on land, water or in the skies.
