I purchase the unit mainly for its inReach feature. But before we get to that and why lets talk about features and support. When first setting up my unit I had some issues with connectivity. A call to support they let me know that a server was down causing the issue but walked be thru an other avenue to set the unity up-they were pleasant and helpful!! In addition Garmin provides great how to videos and webinars on using the unit-spend time there learning. The unit to iPhone and laptop interface is a snap to use and very intuitive. Loading and using maps is also easy to follow-have an issue go to the videos on the Garmin wensite.

I went from the Spot device to InReach Explorer without much fear of being unhappy. This device allows for a great deal of flexibility and still allows normal and emergency functions!

Bought it because its recommended for marine use by Garmin, yet it carries no marine maps, so you cant use it for navigation. Only if your pad or phone happens to be working can you view yourself on a chart... Mine just starting shutting itself off whenever I synced or loaded the map on the screen. Garmin customer service confirmed marine maps dont work on the device, explaining something about how its an amazing device for using satellites (he was simply describing gps and messaging ability) Sent it back. Nearly worthless as a navigation device.

Expensive GPS but worth every penny. Use as regular gps to find your way and Let your family track your every move. The ability to contact loved ones via text from anywhere in the world and knowing your one click of a button away from being rescued is priceless. Highly recommend

This PLB is a life-saver. It is excellent, works even under tree covering. Has a feature that can track you, it was used in the dark when got off the trail in the dark woods and the track trail feature made it so that user was right back on their original trail; even though it felt off it was perfect!! Good thing the user didnt have to rely on the way they felt they should go!! We share this with our hiking family member as well. This thing has a low cost plan available and you can just say - I want to use it in December, Ill just pay for Decemeber service plan. Oh now I want to use it in April, okay, Ill pay to use it in April. (etc.) I think the lowest cost service ranges close to $15, you can pay more and get more service features etc. I cant urge you enough. Do you have a hiker in your family? Worried about them? A snow-shoer? A bicyclist who cycles the world? Someone who heads out into the forest or desert? Buy this for them. It is truly a life-saver. Excellent product. DO make sure you cover the screen so that it doesnt get scratched. I believe a scratch cover may be included.

The Garmin Inreach Explorer + has a lot of nice features but does not offer one that is available on much cheaper devices (even Garmin devices) which is what Garmin calls traceback. When used hiking in unfamiliar terrain this is an essential feature to enable you to retrace your steps back to the beginning of the track. I am very disappointed in Garmin for offering this product at such a steep price without the tracback feature. I am hoping they offer a free software upgrade soon.

The main selling point for me was the satellite text function & GPS tracker. I really like how you could plug in the waypoints for your hike, and add a route to help navigate. That all worked like a charm.

You may venture off the grid, but you’re never out of reach as long as you’re carrying an inReach SE+ or inReach Explorer+. These handheld satellite communicators are designed for the outdoor enthusiast who wants to roam farther and experience more without compromising their loved ones‘ peace of mind. From backcountry experiences to international adventures, inReach provides communication, location sharing, navigation and critical SOS functions for anyone who loves getting away from it all, on land, water or in the skies.
