First let me introduce myself. Im a nature photographer. I often go where no cell service has gone before. As such I have two important needs. I must know where I am and how to get where I wish to be. My other need is to communicate with the outside world for safety and more routine issues. The inReach, since its inception at DeLorme has filled the second need by providing a reliable two-way satellite texting device. Ive had each model and they all worked perfectly... period. My first need, orienteering was achieved over the years by a succession of GPS devices from Garmin. Each was a leap forward from its predecessor and also worked as advertised. Of course, Im no fool so theres a magnetic compass and map tucked in a pocket of my backpack in case of electronic failure.

I use the Garmin Explorer+ primarily for the tracking and communication capabilities. It gives my wife much greater peace of mind when I am out backpacking deep in the backcountry of the Cascade or Olympic Mountains here in Washington state. I use other tools for my primary navigation but it is nice to have the redundancy of the onboard maps on the device.

Poor Maps, pathetic weather reports, absurd interface. If you need an inreach for safety by the the ones without maps. Garmin has always made imposible to use GPSs. Dont know why I thought this would be better. My favorite thing from this is when, while sitting on the Gulf of Mexico, trying to get a Marine weather forecast the inreach informed me I was not close enough to the ocean and please enter a coordinate further away from land. Hey MORONs at Garmin. When someone requests a Marine forcast please please please please give them the closest one. Also the other weather forecast was suppose to give wind which on a sea kayak trip is very important. Well there was no wind on the forecasts I saw. The Garmin Earthmate app does just about nothing. Garmin, at least you could show the weather on a linked phone. Beyond pathetic and way way way over priced.

Mac users beware the syncing software has a bug and Garmin said they know about it but no time frame on when they would get it fixed. The only fix they offered is borrow a PC. Not acceptable.

Expensive GPS but worth every penny. Use as regular gps to find your way and Let your family track your every move. The ability to contact loved ones via text from anywhere in the world and knowing your one click of a button away from being rescued is priceless. Highly recommend

I’ve tried a few. The worst by far was zoleo. This one might not be the most intuitive or have the best battery life but it’s solid all around and reliable.

You may venture off the grid, but you’re never out of reach as long as you’re carrying an inReach SE+ or inReach Explorer+. These handheld satellite communicators are designed for the outdoor enthusiast who wants to roam farther and experience more without compromising their loved ones‘ peace of mind. From backcountry experiences to international adventures, inReach provides communication, location sharing, navigation and critical SOS functions for anyone who loves getting away from it all, on land, water or in the skies.
