Still learning about all about it, but so far I have nothing bad to say about it or the website in which all your planning takes place. Used to using the Suunto Ambit series for my adventures, this is a massive upgrade to say the least. Sat comms via text and the PLB function of the device is paramount these days.

As this was a Garmin GPSr, I had every expectation that it would meet my needs for paperless geocaching and give me the ability to communicate with emergency resources if necessary. Well, I suspect the communication aspect is excellent. However, this unit does not lend itself to paperless geocaching. It looks like a repackaged DeLorme emergency comm unit with a GPSr built-in but there appears to be no way to bulk load geocaching waypoints. I was extremely disappointed and returned the unit for a full refund. I settled for a Garmin 64ST instead.

I like the capability to communicate anywhere and in emergency, you can send SOS. Keeping track of hiking routes is a bonus. Useful for navigation and tracking. Very satisfied with purchase.

Good communication device. Garmin Earthmate maps are outdated. Dont bother spending for the one with the screen as the maps suck and you can use the Earthmate app with any Inreach. That being said, even those maps suck as there is not much selection and they are old.

I threw away my satellite phone because this device was so amazing. Live tracking for my family to watch me when Im out in wilderness or flying a paraglider makes us all feel closer. so cool

Folks, Garmin products are okay. But, the cost of the inReach service is ridiculous. You either have to pay a hefty monthly bill or an annual contract. I went with the annual contract. After 6 months, I decided that I didnt really need the service (particularly in the winter). I called to cancel. Turns out that they are going to bill me one large lump sum for the months I didnt use. I know, seems simple. If you are reading this review, you will be thinking what I did 6 months ago...its cheaper to just go with the yearly plan. But in reality, it is kind of a rip-off. Garmin should be ashamed of themselves for the cost of the service. You pay a premium for the unit, but that is only the beginning of the cost. Over years, this will compound into one of the more expensive investments. Buyer beware...you are getting ready to go down the rabit-hole!

I just used this for four months in the central Rocky Mts. Worked as advertised. Used the texting feature all the time since I was way out of cell service. BUT, you have to use the app on your smart phone to make operations easier. Using the GPS alone is cumbersome but the smart phone app allows many more things and easier texting. I used the mid-level subscription service. For five years I hiked alone and thought since Im 72 I should have some coms capability. I actually had to tell my wife to stop texting so much. HA-HA!
