Due to our Christmas trip being cancelled because of COVID, Christmas was just me and my son. He had always wanted to get this for me and assemble it together. So I surprised him with it and we spent Christmas putting it together. Assembly takes several hours (with two people) but the directions are great. Many of the smallest pieces have spares which is great for those of us with fat finger. The end result is a very realistic looking model

I will admit that I was hesitant to buy at first. Simply because I am a grown adult and buying a Lego set felt a bit odd. It took me a few weeks but I finally took the leap. I am glad I did. This was the most spectacular thing I have done in a while. What you get vs. what you pay is a bargain. Any kid, young or old, can feel like they are right there at NASA helping take part in one of human kinds greatest achievements that has not been matched ever since. I was fortunate enough to finally visit Cape Canaveral a year ago and see in person the Saturn V rocket on display and all the historical artifacts surrounding it within the building. Blending the history I have read on the program, the in-person viewing of such machinery, and then assembling this set was a great trip though history. Assembly is not difficult given the easy-to-follow instructions and the handy packaging that was used. Be sure to have some type of container around to keep the smaller packages of miniature pieces in so they do not roll away! I also organized all the pieces by type, size, and color into neat little piles after opening each package and beginning assemble. Its my nature. It is not necessary to go to such lenghts, but does make building the rocket easier.

I really enjoyed putting this together. Still fascinates me that this rocket is the end result of putting together pieces that are mostly rectangular. Directions were clear and easy to follow and pieces well-organized to correspond with where you are in the process. Just be prepared for the length of it, but definitely worth making room as its a nice piece to add to a room of your choice :)

Some background: I loved LEGO as a kid, as much for tinkering and building new things as for building sets, but it has been nearly a decade since last I built a set. But this holiday, I found I had some time to spare for something like this and, as someone who enjoys following spaceflight news and history, this set caught my eye. And wow, did this deliver. This set is at once ingeniously designed (the innards and ways the cylindrical shape and step-downs are accomplished are amazing), pretty accurate to life (not only in looks, but also in the staging), and enormous (reading the note that it was one meter long on the box did not prepare me for the awesome reality of this thing). Its also, incidentally, beautiful. LEGO has always done Space themes well, and I am happy to have experienced that that tradition has been carried forward. This is a set with a great balance between special pieces (the printed, not stickered, tiles are sparingly used exactly where theyre needed) and creatively used normal pieces is excellent. In the best LEGO way, this set repurposes many pieces for use in ways which are often surprising in order to connect at angles or represent rocketry plumbing. Some areas are so complex that only after a few pages of directions is the purpose of some of the innards fully revealed; building this set is like a drama, where sometimes I worried that here or there was an unnecessary complexity which would ultimately lead to weakness. But every time, this was disproved once the whole point of a section of building was achieved. There are a few spots where I felt like one piece could have been used in place of two or four others, in a way which suggests to me that some decisions in the construction of this set were specifically for the purpose of reaching that 1969 number exactly. Cool move. Nevertheless, completed, this thing looks effortless. So, in conclusion: I applaud the faithfulness, creativity, and value of this set, especially for the experience of building it, and Im very happy to get back into LEGO after years!

I bought this for my husband for Christmas. He loves it and it will look great on his bookshelf in his home office. Hes spent a bunch of time working on it with our 8 year old daughter. Definitely recommend if you need a gift for someone who loves the space program.
