> 3 dayIve used several Netgear products, including this 16-port 10/100/1000 switch as well as the Netgear 4-port 10/100/1000 mini-switch, and Ive never experienced any problem. I suspect that some of the failures youre reading about have to do with inadequate ventilation. This is a fanless switch, and if you dont have it located in an area where it can dissipate heat, youll see that it gets very hot. This can also occur when you pile stuff on top of the switch, as might happen if you locate it in a closet, or put another heat producing device on top of it, like a cable or DSL modem. This caveat is also included in the setup instructions, so its ultimate location should be taken into consideration prior to your purchase.

> 3 dayIn my usage model, I have this switch on one end of the house, wired to a switch next to the router in the front of the house which has the gateway. It seems to work just fine as long as you leave the ports static and dont disconnect a laptop and move it to a different port on the same switch. Basically I have one dock with my PC connected and I want to move to another desk with just the Ethernet cable and plug in there, it causes the switch to do something to upstream traffic - seemingly confusing my network up to my router. This causes the internet gateway to effectively drop for all users in the house. I have to turn this switch off and then on again, which resolves the problem.

> 3 dayIve had multiple Netgear switches. Theyre usually quite durable; I have two of the plastic Gigabit switches which are still running strong for over five years, no problem. I previously had a metal router with a comm port that was fantastically customizable and was used daily for four years until I sold it. I thought this metal version would be equally durable; it failed within 2 months. Dead as a doornail. I would otherwise rate the switch as a one star experience but for Netgears customer service. Opened up a ticket, chatted a few minutes with a rep, dropped the old one in the mail and in 7 days had a BRAND NEW (not refurbished) switch. So I rated the purchase as a 3 star. If the new switch lasts, thus proving the former device as a one-time dud, Ill upgrade and update my rating.

> 3 day5 port switch got full. This allowed expansion. A plus is the same wall wart power supply feeds both, so I didnt have to crawl under the desk.
