> 3 dayI like both the thombow mono and mars Lumograph, you cant go wrong with either set I used medium weight 70lb drawing paper for testing both sets come with 12 pencils of the same hardness level , 4H, 3H, 2H, H, HB, F B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6B Tombow Mono come in plastic packaging with 12 unsharpened pencils, eraser and small sharpener Mars Lumograph some with 12 pre sharpened pencils in a nice metal tin case Tombow Mono hexagon barrel is slightly larger then the Mars Lumogrph Mono has pencil grade marked on 4 of the 8 side, Mars Lumograph Is marked on all 8 mono grade is marked with gold over white, Mars is easier to see quickly marked with white over black both have a nice barrel finish both sharpen well, although mono has a slightly rougher wood after sharpening with the hand sharpener it came with. both sets feel the same on paper. very smooth with the softer grades all the way up to 2H, 3H and 4H started to feel a little scratchy on the paper as expected for the hardness. both sets blended the same overall both sets are comparable to each other. it really comes down to what you want in the set. the Tombow Mono is a bit cheaper but you also get an eraser and sharpener. the mars lumograph comes with a nice metal tin for a few $ more. Because of the nice metal tin i keep the mars Lumograph on my desk and use them at home. I have the Tombow mono set in my Derwent Travel bag with my Charcoal pencils for on the go drawing.

> 3 dayI review pencils on YouTube (rixcandoit), and find the Staedtler Lumograph drawing pencils to be at the top in quality and tonal application. In fact, of all the drawing pencil packs (tins) that I have, the Staedtler Lumograph tops them all in the upper soft range (5B and higher). I believe they must add some carbon to the graphite mix for their really soft pencils to make them so dark with less reflective shine that most other pencils sets have at their softest range. Only the General Pencil Co. 9xxb pencil rivals the 9B Lumograph, but the 9xxb is not part of a standard pencil tin kit.

> 3 dayI have drawn for years mostly with mechanical pencils because I hated not having a consistent sharp point and I hated the scratchy feeling of the hard graphite wood pencils. I never would have thought that you would gain much from a high quality wood pencil vs. a less expensive pencil. It is just wood and graphite, right? Not exactly. These pencils are better. The harder H through H4 feel hard, but they dont have the irritating rough spots of clay that suddenly scratch the paper. I also found that with a small quality pencil sharpener like the Alvin Brass Bullet Sharpener, getting a sharp point is just a matter of a few twists of the pencil. I was use to those plastic low quality pencil sharpeners that seemed to split the wood or would put blisters on your fingers from twisting so hard. As a result I would use an electric pencil sharpener that eats too much of your expensive pencils. I recommend using a small handheld quality sharpener and your pencils will last a lot longer. All in all, high quality pencils, a little more expensive, but well worth it and dont forget to get a high quality handheld pencil sharpener.

Greater than one weeki was going to buy a cheaper graphite pencil set. i really didnt have a clue. ive done all of my drawing w #2 writing pencils. a customer who gave an exceptional review, pointed out the shortcomings of the cheaper product. he actually presented a mini-lesson on what the numbers and letters of the pencils meant. what constitutes a good pencil, sharpener, etc. what i, and many other customers appreciated, was that he also gave his suggestions for a good pencil. he recommended staedtler mars lumograph. he was so thorough that i felt comfortable and bought the set. he suggested buying individual pencils, but id have to drive several miles to do that. i paid a few extra dollars to have this basic set delivered to my home. because i have this starter kit, i can, when im at the arts store, pick up a few of, the ones i most use. i feel that ive made a sound purchase w this kit thatll hold me over. theyre professional grade, sharpen easily w/o breaking the lead, with a good metal sharpener. they erase w/o leaving dark impressions. with a good metal sharpener, they have nice points. the lead doesnt break fr a bit of pressure. also, important to we, whore losing high visual definition, is that the pencil grade is in large print, at the top of the pencil, contrasted boldly, white on black. the metal pencil holder means transportability. each pencil sits snuggly in its own well. no hunting for the right pencil, no digging at the bottom of a tote and finding the point broken. if there is an art store near you, you can save by getting them individually. i prefer having them in the metal case. either way this is a good pencil kit.
