It is rugged for sure. I dropped it off a 40ft cliff and it survived fine. Im thinking of getting another one for my emergency kit.

great. better than any flashlight

This is an excellent emergency lantern. Its bright, adjustable, uses red light to lessen impact on vision at night, and can be mounted or hung various ways. While recently testing a back-up generator, we used the lantern to illuminate our basement breaker panel...alot better than holding a small flashlight in your mouth while flipping breakers in total darkness.

I have both this lantern and the Rayovac SE3DLNA and Id have to say that the streamlight siege has some features that make me like it just a little bit better. First, the battery insertion is WAY easier. Lining up the tiny tabs to get the bottom screwed on the Rayovac is very difficult even under ideal circumstances. Second, the small hook on the handle as well as the clips on top and bottom of the Siege are very handy when hanging on a rope. Great product all around.

Having got your attention... Bought to gift so it was disappointing it didnt come boxed. Im certain its new, still had its retail hanger and lens sleeve. I think the marketing department has needlessly thrown away a star by going boxless. That aside Im hugely impressed with the product, so much so Im probably going to order one for myself. Though I dont personally favour D cells it appears to work OK on AA to D adapters though obviously run-time will be less. Size wise I dont think it is excessively large for a main household emergency lantern or to put that differently maybe AA lanterns are a little small for household duty. I like the warm white light. It beggars belief that some lanterns makers are still using cool white. Other likes compared with the obvious competition, strong karabiner clips top and bottom and the little loop on the carry handle to stop it falling from a line, though Id still recommend using the clip. Also of note is the keyed battery cover (no stick-on arrows here), though I did find the battery adapters tended to obstruct the pillar. Probably just needs some practice. Everything else I hope is in accordance with the product description.
