I was at first hesitant about buying an external HDD because there were so many to choose from but Im glad that I chose WD. Although there is a lot of accompanied software with the HDD most of it is beneficial and I would rather have that then no assistive software. SPEED: Im not using a stop watch and clocking how fast exactly file transfers take but lets just say its within a tolerable range of time depending on how large of a transfer you are doing. When I first got this I set up a backup of my most important documents and would say after about 30 minutes I had a large part of my computer backed up without issue. USER FRIENDLINESS: The included softwares really help you to get control over your data. Although some may not find use for them I like the fact that WD includes management softwares. All in all this was a great purchase for the price and I can rest well knowing that my past 6 years of computer data is safe and sound!

First off, theres really nothing wrong with the drive and its worked great for 7 years. Now I am having issues with corrupted files and trying to recover / fix the drive now is near impossible as it may be completely failing on me now. This is a sad because its been solid for very long and if I have to, I will have to reformat almost 500gb of backup data, which will be completely lost. Thank god its nothing too important though!

This gets four stars instead of five because there is a major glitch with the included software that comes installed on the drive. Additionally, it is purported to be formatted for Mac but did not function properly out of the box (could have just been my computer, but I doubt it). RECOMMENDATIONS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you ordered this for something like a Macbook Pro, as soon as you get it and plug it in, delete the software on the disc and reformat it to Mac OS X Journaled. IF YOU PLAN TO COPY OVER TO THIS NEW STORAGE THE CONTENTS OF AN OLD EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE, CHECK THE FORMAT OF THE OLD DRIVE: If the old drive is formatted as a case-sensitive device, format this new drive as case-sensitive as well. Otherwise, the transfer will not work. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Otherwise, the drive is great and works as expected. Great deal for 2 TB. The read/write speeds are 8-9 times slower than my internal Samsung 850 EVO SDD, but that is 1) expected and 2) not a noticable factor in day-to-day use.

Pretty good device...very fast. For some strange reason, I cannot perform a system image on my Windows 7 computer with it, which is why I bought it in the first place. (Yes, its formatted properly). What I dont like is that it doesnt seem to let you decide how often or manually (which is what I want) that you can do a back-up. It wants to set an automatic backup date regardless of what you want. Well, tough...its just a laptop; were not going to be plugged in all the time, are we? Why does everyone make stuff with predetermined controls? You can just unplug it, but Im sure in time, that wont be good for it.

Im updating the rating on this from one to three stars after some kind members offered me help on getting it to work with my Mac Still not an easy task but it is possible and even easy if you havent yet stored a lot on the drive. However if you have a lot of data from a Windows pic on the drive its still quite a process to get that to you Mac not simply a plug and use. Ok heres is the problem with this admitted stellar value USB drive NOWHERE DOES IT TELL YOU IT WILL NOT WORK WITH A MAC. Shame on you Western Digital. Shame Shame Shame. I understand there was a time in history that it was considered acceptable for a company to ignore Apple products and pretend they no longer existed and that is (NO) was accepted because for a while they didnt really exist. However that was what ten years ago at least! I bought this drive to back up some very valuable files of my deceased partner, memories, photos, documents that I cherished and wanted to preserve, which i could as long as i didnt buy a new Mac computer. After I bought a Mac i discovered that yes I could use this drive after I reformatted the drive, erasing all my beloved memories and starting from scratch. Tech support was atrocious and the only positive info they gave me was that i couldnt use the drive without erasing everything on it. So bottom line....If your sticking to Windows for life and want to save your lifes work then buy this drive. If you decide to migrate to a Mac, throw your life on this drive away and start from day one in your new Mac world. When will companies learn that we just all want to get along?

Fantastic external hard drive, legitimately one of the best portables out there. BUT make sure youre purchasing a new one, not from a 3rd party seller or any nonsense. I ordered a second one after my first and #2 came completely DOA. I cant be sure, but I think it actually installed some malware on my computer after not being detected by Windows, as MBAM came up with 3 new hits after I realized it was dead. The whole thing was very fishy, the box was in terrible condition, and honestly I shouldve looked at the listing a little better.. But the first one has been fantastic! Overall, that was my fault and not WDs fault. This external is great for portable storage. The read/write speed isnt the best but thats not really what you should be using an external for anyway -- at least until the tech catches up there.. Definitely like the form factor, and at 1TB/60$ its really worth it just to see how itll suit your needs. I mostly use it for bringing music to/from work, and its very easy to load up n go. The second one I wanted to purchase was going to just be to backup the first one for longer-term storage. Ive since re-ordered a legitimate one and hopefully things go better. tldr: Watch out for whos shipping the listing, everything changes depending on size/color/etc.. I fell for a jape.

This is generally a good hard drive. Its fast and operates just like a hard drive should. Unfortunately, it failed after only 3 years of having it. The spindle motor had broken on the inside and it would not function. Which is pretty unfortunate, to say the least, because Ive had the hard drive in my laptop and my desktop for significantly longer and both of those drives still work. I had only bought the 2 year data recovery plan too, so I had to pay $1.2k to get all of my data off the hard drive. This is a good drive to get as long as you back up all your stuff on a different drive as well, or on cloud storage or something. Dont expect it to last more than 3 years. If it does, then thats great. I would invest the extra cash into a Solid State Drive, but if you need a cheap option for storage, this drive is just fine

Ive got several of these, and use them for backups and large data transfer tasks. So far, Ive never had one fail, and Ive been using them for a couple years. Its always possible to get a bad one with any electronic device, but my experience to date has been one of reliability. Watch the software though - it can be very useful if you want to arrange for scheduled backups, and I use it frequently with good results. However, one time on one PC I found the software was gobbling up all kinds of CPU cycles and making it impossible to do anything on that box. Uninstalling the software solved the issue (using the device itself afterwards was still fine), but if things get crunchy on your box, take a look at your services and processes and make sure the software isnt constantly trying to call home to mommy. This only occurred once, and on one PC (I have/maintain several), so it might have been an anomaly. Still good drives. Definitely recommend getting cases for them so they dont get all banged up. Protect your investment.

I had gotten this hard drive for my Xbox One and was concerned that the setup would be difficult, but it was INSANELY easy. For 2 TB, I am able to have all my games on my hard drive and easy to access using the Kinect. Additionally, the moment I plugged it in the Xbox gave me a prompt to set up the Hard drive which was simply giving it a name, naturally I went with Watson, due to my XBones increased capacity to remember and feel emotion. After that it asks if you want to use it as a default hard drive, and since mine was pretty full I said yes, so now all my games and everything downloads there. No need for additional outlets, takes only a minute to set up. Very satisfied with this purchase. (I would not go higher than 2 TB, because this will slow down the xbox, supposedly)

Everything seems to be working out great with this drive. Ive only had it for two days though. I bought this drive for my Xbox One. It was recognized right away and started moving and installing my own game library. It does get slightly hot when it is running that doesnt seem to affect it. The drive greatly improves the performance of games and beats the internal drive right out the park! Black Ops 3 was horrible when it was installed on the internal but now it plays way smoother. NOTE: I am an Xbox preview member, so game performance is affected by the preview updates. Overall, the drive is excellent. Will update as the drive is tested longer. I am also running a Seagate Expansion 1TB portable drive for more storage. It was a gift for Christmas. There doesnt seem to be a noticeable difference between the WD 2TB but Western Digital seems to be more reliable than Seagates line of portable hard drives from multiple site reviews. This is debatable.

WD brings you the My Passport Ultra in a sleek and powerful device. 1TB of storage in a portable hard drive with the option to use cloud backup with Dropbox. Fast and easy connectivity using USB 3.0. Formatted NTFS for Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 operating systems. Requires reformatting for Mac OS. Compatibility may vary depending on user"s hardware configuration and operating systems. Portable Drive cases are available and sold separately. Compatible with: Mac
