> 3 dayBeing somewhat a luddite, I had to hack my way through this to include latest utilities and backup program from Western Digital and install them. Then I reformatted the drive to a simple volume to insure it would work on my Windows 7 machine. Maybe unnecessary but I wanted to play with it some having never used one before. I also added a fuschia grip and Lacdo Waterproof Hard EVA Shockproof case. I do hope not to test the waterproofness or the shock sensitivity. The manual does caution about moving it about while in use The utilities and backup program are without frills and pretty straightforward so its hard to screw it up. It even has blinky lights so you can tell when its doing something. Im using this as backup for two small 128 Gb solid state drives so there is plenty of room on it. I did manage to do a drive backup and system image for both computers so I am somewhat relieved at getting that done. I had lost everything when my old XP machine died a horrible thrashing death with no backup. Lesson learned and I invested in this thingy which Im well pleased with so far. Its added peace of mind. So if youre somewhat challenged computer wise yet feel confident enough to learn, I recommend this highly. Its easy to set up and use and something that everyone should do... backup your stuff and rest easier.

> 3 dayEasy to set up, data transfer seems very fast. This external hard drive is used as a backup on three computers and goes readily from one to the other. I have had a WD external drive for several years and it has been completely dependable. It is just not large enough to keep the backups from three computers, especially since my wife loves to take LOTS of pictures and since she got an i-Phone, the necessary disk space has expanded greatly. I also like this color, as it really stands out from all the other black computer paraphernalia around my desks.

> 3 dayA really nice back-up drive! Easy to use, and I would have given 5 stars but for one thing. If you install the software on the drive, it doesnt have a feature for just moving certain files to the drive. Only back-up and restore. I dont want to back up my computer because Im switching and dont want all the files associated with it. But, it works flawlessly (so far) when I just move files to it. The price was there, quality is there, and delivered very quickly! I may get another one.

> 3 dayEvery tech needs one of these. You dont need to use the software included which is a plus for vme as I like to chose. Excellent transfer rates with 3.0 usb. If your motherboard puts out low voltage as my Asus 79 Delux on the 2.0 but the 3.0s work fine on most. use the drivers on the WD site to get it to work. Works on 90% of all pcs without drivers. No AC needed one cord although proprietary. I recommend the accessory rubber case (WD Grip Pack) available on Amazon in multiple colors that comes with a extra cord also. It protect it and you get he extra cord. Pros Size 3.0 Transfer speed Cons proprietary cables.

> 3 dayI recently purchased this specifically for backing up my desktop and so far Im on the fence about it (thus 3 stars). The drive itself is nice but the software that comes with it is less than stellar. Pros (IMHO): * Its small, sleek, and has a nice design. * No problems connecting - Im running Windows 7 and my computer recognized it immediately. * It comes with its own converter cord (USB 2.0 to 3.0). * It has a ridiculous amount of space on the drive that I cant possibly fill up (which is a good thing). * Price seemed fair. Cons: * The backup software sucks. The program took forever to install and once installed it didnt come with any sort of instructions. I told it to start the backup and nothing happened. Tried a second time and still the same. I had to uninstall it and reinstall to get it to start working. Even then theres no way to actually know its DOING anything except by looking at the amount of space used on the drive or by going through and hand-checking the WD Backup folder (which is tedious). I MUCH prefer the Norton backup that shows green arrows on everything that has been backed up. * Its also ridiculously slow AND it slows down my computer. It took almost all day to complete the backup and while it was running I kept getting notifications about high CPU usage due to the drive. Ive never had a problem with my computer running slow - internet surfing, streaming, gaming - all fine. This little drive made my computer feel like it was wading through mud. Odd. Overall: I like the actual drive but I hate the backup software. I have no idea if the backup/restore actually works and I hate that I spent $59 on something that I have no confidence in. Im just crossing my fingers and hoping I never actually need the thing (knock on wood).

> 3 dayFairly pleasant with this external hard drive! I brought the 1TB Black version. I was in need of more space and this makes my life much easier. A very huge plus for this drive was that it was super easy to set up. In 5 minutes of connecting, I could already load up storage into the drive and put it in use! Also, the WD software that comes with this drive instillation is also very useful. Scanning for my drive for errors is very helpful so kudos to WD for making a software like this! The one thing that I didnt like was that sometimes when I want to safely remove the hard drive, it would say it would be in use and cannot be removed. Everything would be closed yet this error would still pop up. Because of this reason, I had to give this drive 4 stars instead of 5. I actually dont mind this error because I can simply just shut off my laptop and remove it, but it can sometimes be annoying. TLDR; PROS: Easy to set up, great WD software to protect and backup your drive. Highly recommended. CONS: Sometimes cannot safely remove hard drive, have to shut down laptop in order to.

> 3 dayIn August 2016 I replaced an older WD Passport that I had used for several years with this one. While my older Passport was still operating well, I was concerned about its age and decided a new one would provide more protection against possible storage failures. Unfortunately the new Passport began operating erratically one day in January 2017 and then failed completely - not allowing me access to my files. I have no idea why it failed. - and neither does the computer service specialist that I had look at it. I have enough faith in WD that I am purchasing a new Passport (my fourth) today. I just hope it lasts longer than my last one.

> 3 dayThis is my 5th WD Passport drive and my second WD USB 3.0 drive. There is hardly any difference between the 2015 version and the 2014 version drive - except for a few mm shaved off the external dimensions and a little faster read/write speed (updated firmware). I use my Passport drives to backup my data/documents. I backed up my 1 TB video archive at transfer speeds as high as 120 mb/s. Read speeds were also in the same range - 125-130 mb/s. This was extremely easy to use. I just plugged it in and followed the instructions in the User Manuals folder (ENG for English). After a quick download, I was able to set my back-up preferences (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, etc.) and then click and drag my files into the Passport. Although my iTunes are saved in the Cloud, I was even able to fit my extensive music collection on the Passport too. Excelente!

> 3 dayPros: Works with USB 2.0 and 3.0, which is what you would expect. But its hard to find that info here. So there you have it. Come pre-partitioned for NTFS, with loads of government spyware for windows. I wiped it out and partitioned for Ext4 to use it for Linux. Works when directly connected to my Raspberry Pi 2 Model B without a hub (once I modified /boot/config.txt and added max_usb_current=1). Cons: The only thing I can think of to complain about is the activity LED seems like it should be on the opposite end of the drive as the cable, but it isnt. Its also illuminated when there is no activity, but blinks off and on when there is activity. Its also quite bright when you look right at it, though it doesnt seem to illuminate a dark room in an annoying way. The LED is white. > 3 dayI found the product to deficient. It comes with very inflexible backup software. Worst of all, it does not properly recover the backed up files! After purchasing a new laptop, I shrank and partitioned my laptop’s hard drive partition. I moved all of my data files from my old laptop, from my Maxtor backup, and from other sources onto folders on my new drive partition. I installed the WD software. I attempted a backup. I was amazed at how inflexible the supplied backup software is! One can backup the entire system, or some system folders on a drive’s partition, or a drive’s entire partition. First of all, I do not want a complete backup. I just wanted to backup my data partition. Secondly, I have no idea on how to specify a “system folder”. Thus, not all of my root folders, on my secondary data partition, were selectable. Thirdly, I did not want to back up an entire partition. I settled for backing up the entire newly created laptop’s data partition. The backup went well. I performed several automated backups. These incremental backups went well. I wanted a smaller primary partition and a larger secondary partition on my laptop. Thus, I, again, shank and partitioned new laptop’s primary partition again. In order to get a single larger secondary partition, I had to delete my current secondary partition, which contains all of my laptop data. I then joined the two new partitions into a single (and larger) partition and formatted this new partition. I felt that I was safe. New laptop, new backup drive, and tested software, why not? I had about 139gb of data on my WD drive. Using the WD software, I attempted a recovery three times. All three failed with a message, which suggested that I check the cable or the USB port. I panicked! I decided to use the Windows 10 software for recovery. I really panicked. By mistake, I selected CUT instead of COPY! After the files were moved, I looked at the dates on my files. They were clobbered. Some dates were correct. Most dates were the date of my original backup. The WD backup was empty! I had no options except to back up my files with clobbered dates onto the WD backup! This backup worked just fine. It is too bad that the WD recovery software failed three times. Note that the same cable and same port, which was used for the three failed WD recoveries, was used for the Windows 10 recovery and the WP backup. Does this smell like rotten software? Or, does it smell like possibly bad hardware? All I know is it smells. Now, the vast majority of my files on my laptop and my WD backup drive have clobbered date information. I would suggest using this product only if you are not going to do a recovery!
