I bought this drive hoping to back up my entire computer to it, which worked absolutely perfectly. I own a Mac, and while the packaging stated Windows 10, It worked perfectly well after a simple reformatting (This is also stated in the Features and Details section of the product). In terms of aesthetics, the drive stays fairly slim, but is completely composed of plastic. The plastic is not horrible, its really nice actually, but I still would have preferred a different build material, one that would protect the internals more. I did purchase an add-on case, so I think that takes care of the problem. I do not have too much experience with backup drives as I usually dont take the way of caution and instead decide to trust my computers SSD, but with this drive I am happy to say the switch has been fast and easy. I think it was well worth the asking price compared to other options, especially for a name brand like WD. I would suggest this to anyone looking for a simple USB backup drive.

This is my 5th WD Passport drive and my second WD USB 3.0 drive. There is hardly any difference between the 2015 version and the 2014 version drive - except for a few mm shaved off the external dimensions and a little faster read/write speed (updated firmware). I use my Passport drives to backup my data/documents. I backed up my 1 TB video archive at transfer speeds as high as 120 mb/s. Read speeds were also in the same range - 125-130 mb/s. This was extremely easy to use. I just plugged it in and followed the instructions in the User Manuals folder (ENG for English). After a quick download, I was able to set my back-up preferences (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, etc.) and then click and drag my files into the Passport. Although my iTunes are saved in the Cloud, I was even able to fit my extensive music collection on the Passport too. Excelente!

Im using this drive as a offsite backup, and it works fine. I am also using it with a Mac, which requires a re-format. That is very easy to do using the Disk Utility built into OSX--but it takes a while. Im not willing to pay more for the same drive in a Mac version. I now have three WD backup drives, and they all look the same except that this one is blue. The colors are more than a fashion statement; they let you identify drives used for different purposes at a glance. I AM willing to pay a little more for Western Digital over drives from other brands. They have proven more reliable for me over the years. Its much too soon to comment on the reliability of this one.

I am a big fan of WD portable drives ever since they started to come out and they have never failed on me. Im done using those powered, bulky external hard drives. These are very portable and reliable in my opinion. Choice of colors is also great if you like to separate your media into different drives. I have purchased all 3 colors and all 3 look great! I use the black drive for my movie collection hooked-up to an apple tv in the living room, the red drive for all my sensitive and personal media like family photos and video, and the blue one for my music collection which I actually take on the road (as a backup) with me and for when I have dj gigs. I sync this drive with my laptops music collection. All 3 drives get constant usage on an almost daily basis. Very recommended!

Fairly pleasant with this external hard drive! I brought the 1TB Black version. I was in need of more space and this makes my life much easier. A very huge plus for this drive was that it was super easy to set up. In 5 minutes of connecting, I could already load up storage into the drive and put it in use! Also, the WD software that comes with this drive instillation is also very useful. Scanning for my drive for errors is very helpful so kudos to WD for making a software like this! The one thing that I didnt like was that sometimes when I want to safely remove the hard drive, it would say it would be in use and cannot be removed. Everything would be closed yet this error would still pop up. Because of this reason, I had to give this drive 4 stars instead of 5. I actually dont mind this error because I can simply just shut off my laptop and remove it, but it can sometimes be annoying. TLDR; PROS: Easy to set up, great WD software to protect and backup your drive. Highly recommended. CONS: Sometimes cannot safely remove hard drive, have to shut down laptop in order to.

This model is the 2015 generation of the many My Passport drives Ive owned or purchased for clients. They have proven reliable and good performers. They have incrementally improved with each new generation. BOTTOM LINE (for the impatient): The new model is a little bit faster than last years and adds a 3TB and 4TB model. This My Passport Ultra has a more attractive satiny finish and there is now a white model to fit in better for Mac users. Otherwise its almost identical to the older model. If these differences are not important for you, you may want to get this or

Being somewhat a luddite, I had to hack my way through this to include latest utilities and backup program from Western Digital and install them. Then I reformatted the drive to a simple volume to insure it would work on my Windows 7 machine. Maybe unnecessary but I wanted to play with it some having never used one before. I also added a fuschia grip and Lacdo Waterproof Hard EVA Shockproof case. I do hope not to test the waterproofness or the shock sensitivity. The manual does caution about moving it about while in use The utilities and backup program are without frills and pretty straightforward so its hard to screw it up. It even has blinky lights so you can tell when its doing something. Im using this as backup for two small 128 Gb solid state drives so there is plenty of room on it. I did manage to do a drive backup and system image for both computers so I am somewhat relieved at getting that done. I had lost everything when my old XP machine died a horrible thrashing death with no backup. Lesson learned and I invested in this thingy which Im well pleased with so far. Its added peace of mind. So if youre somewhat challenged computer wise yet feel confident enough to learn, I recommend this highly. Its easy to set up and use and something that everyone should do... backup your stuff and rest easier.

I was at first hesitant about buying an external HDD because there were so many to choose from but Im glad that I chose WD. Although there is a lot of accompanied software with the HDD most of it is beneficial and I would rather have that then no assistive software. SPEED: Im not using a stop watch and clocking how fast exactly file transfers take but lets just say its within a tolerable range of time depending on how large of a transfer you are doing. When I first got this I set up a backup of my most important documents and would say after about 30 minutes I had a large part of my computer backed up without issue. USER FRIENDLINESS: The included softwares really help you to get control over your data. Although some may not find use for them I like the fact that WD includes management softwares. All in all this was a great purchase for the price and I can rest well knowing that my past 6 years of computer data is safe and sound!

I am extremely disappointed in this purchase. I purchased this less than two months ago to replace another Western Digital external hard drive for Mac, and I am already having the same issue with no resolution. Initially the hard drive worked fine, but after 4-5 weeks it suddenly became very temperamental; claiming that the device was disconnected when I would shift position of the cord slightly. After a week or two of that, it was no longer recognizable, yet the light was on and it appeared to make noise as if it were on. My computer recognizes it is plugged in, but I am unable to access it. I have spent many hours trying to find a solution through the website and other sources with no solution. I work in two fields where we constantly need to be using external hard drives, and this is unacceptable. I am legally obligated to securely store data for three to five years for my job in academia. I have lost money in my photography job, as I am unable to access photos that I need to get to clients in a timely manner, not to mention the few dollars I spent to buy a third cord to make sure it wasnt a wiring issue. I have spent countless hours reprocessing photos that I had finished before because I keep my raw images on another disk. I gave this product two stars because it does have a three year warranty and I was able to spend an additional $10 for insurance in case I have to pay someone to retrieve the data from the disk. Unfortunately, I do not trust this brand any longer and I will not be using the warranty just so I can switch brands. Additionally, the company contacted me after I had complained about these issues via Twitter. Despite me sending them my personal information so they could resolve the issue, I have yet to receive a phone call or email from them.

I use this drive to backup my laptop computer. I like the fact that it doesnt require a separate power cord, like some other external hard drives. I like the small form factor of this drive too. It is a similar size as a laptop computer hard drive. Also it supports USB 3.0 data transfer speeds, which is also nice, as USB 3.0 is more than ten times faster than USB 2.0. Of course USB 3.0 is backwards compatible, so it will work with any computers USB port, although its performance will be limited to the speed of the USB port that it is plugged into. Although it comes with software to encrypt the drive, I havent used it, so I cant vouch for the quality of that software. I encrypt my own files anyway, using other software. Some people use utilities like truecrypt, some people use password protected RAR files. Do whatever works best for you, if you want to encrypt something. As for the cloud storage software it comes with, that basically requires you to set up a drop box account, because that is what it really uses to store your date in the cloud. Thats kind of useless, you could just use drop box anyway, without needing to use this Western Digital software as a front end for it. Maybe it is useful for some people, but I dont find any use in doing things that way. So aside from my neutral comments about the software that this drive comes with, which I find to completely be unnecessary, I am just rating the hardware its self as 5 stars.
