Dead simple to use, very compact to make it portable...its really a good drive. I dont even notice its in my bag, and the fact that it runs entirely off USB means no additional (and bulky) power supply. I have to confess to being surprised at how inexpensive mass storage has become...1 TB is really quite a bit of space at this price point. Installation is so easy as to be trivial - on a Windows 7 machine, I just plugged it in...the drive was recognized immediately and ready to go in about 2 minutes. Data transfer is speedy enough to support watching movies. My major nit is all the crap that is on the drive. Frankly, Im not going to use something like this for automatic backups...for me this is a portable drive, not really something thats going to be plugged in all the time. I didnt need nor want any of the applications on the drive, so I just deleted them all. Anyway, a good drive, especially for the money. I like it a lot.

Overall it is good product. Failed after over 2 yrs (almost 3 yrs). During these years, I have to let windows repair it and re-format 3 time to re-use it. At the end, I download hard drive tools form wd site to test. The tool said it good, passed but can not performed the extended test. Bad tools.

Fantastic external hard drive, legitimately one of the best portables out there. BUT make sure youre purchasing a new one, not from a 3rd party seller or any nonsense. I ordered a second one after my first and #2 came completely DOA. I cant be sure, but I think it actually installed some malware on my computer after not being detected by Windows, as MBAM came up with 3 new hits after I realized it was dead. The whole thing was very fishy, the box was in terrible condition, and honestly I shouldve looked at the listing a little better.. But the first one has been fantastic! Overall, that was my fault and not WDs fault. This external is great for portable storage. The read/write speed isnt the best but thats not really what you should be using an external for anyway -- at least until the tech catches up there.. Definitely like the form factor, and at 1TB/60$ its really worth it just to see how itll suit your needs. I mostly use it for bringing music to/from work, and its very easy to load up n go. The second one I wanted to purchase was going to just be to backup the first one for longer-term storage. Ive since re-ordered a legitimate one and hopefully things go better. tldr: Watch out for whos shipping the listing, everything changes depending on size/color/etc.. I fell for a jape.

This backup drive does exactly what it says. No complaints, Perfectly satisfied, though it may not be as fast as advertised on some systems, including mine. On my computer, which is a 2014 era 1.86Ghz ASUS with 4Gb Ram, the process is a bit slow, even on a USB 3.0 slot. I used the included software to backup about 45 Gigs of documents, photos, and music for an initial trial. It took about 90 minutes for 45 Gigs. Thats about 1 Gig per two minutes, far from what some users report at 5 Gigs per second. This was on a USB 3.0 slot. So, just to warn you ahead of time, it may be pretty slow on low performance computers. Especially for large back ups. You can schedule backups hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly automatically, and the backup software that is included in this drive will update any information youve saved on your computers hard drive in that span of time. This is really convenient for me as a writer. I dont have to manually back up my files anymore. If Ive been working on a long file like a book for over a month, I can back up my whole document on the first backup, and then it will back up just the part Ive written since the last backup, in subsequent backups. For instance, I did my second backup today, and it was just 13 Megs of information that Ive added since my initial 45 Gig first backup. This second backup took about 40 minutes total. Backing up information can be done in the background if you want to work on other things while it is taking place, which makes the included software convenient. Just click one button for each subsequent backup, or if you have the Western Digital drive attached, it will backup at the specified hour, day, week, or month that you want to backup, automatically, with no click of a button.. You can initially choose which file paths and folders you want to backup. You dont have to back up your computers whole hard drive in automatic backups. In my case, I chose just Documents, Photos, and Music. As other users have hinted, the files are backed up on the Western Digital drive in a special file format with different file extensions than the source file on your hard drive. They appear in a bin folder on the Western Digital hard drive. Though not that obvious, they are still easy to find. Restoring backed up data is basically one click of a button as well, using the software included. I have not tried restoring data as yet. However, if you would rather back up your files manually and exactly as they are on your computers hard drive (same file names and extensions, etc.), you can do so just as easily as with any other USB drive. Simply copy the files directly to the Western Digital hard drive using your Windows File Explorer, like you would with any USB drive. Just out of curiosity, I copied my 45 Gigs of files manually a second time, not using the Western Digital backup software, but Windows file explorer instead. The process was painless and easy since Western Digital drive is formatted in NTFS, just like most computer hard drives. It only took 2 minutes for my computer to copy 45 Gigs of files directly to the Western Digital drive using Windows copy feature rather than Western Digitals software. This was on a USB 3.0 slot. So, it easy to use this drive with the included software, or just as a supplemental hard drive saving to it like you would any USB drive.

In early February 2016 I purchased the WD 2TB Black My Passport Ultra Portable External Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBBKD0020BBK-NESN [Old Model]. I was very inexperienced with External Hard Drives, as well as the WD brand and programming. Fortunately, both Hard Drive and WD programming are extremely user friendly. Step by Step instructions, Security features including Password Protection (protects Hard Drive from being accessed entirely, unless the correct password is entered.), Ultra lightweight!!!, and super quiet (so extremely quiet, on some occasions I wasnt sure the device was even running, It was every time!)... EXTREMELY, WHOLEHEARTEDLY, and OVERLY SATISFIED WITH THIS PURCHASE/PRODUCT and well as with WD (Western Digital) its self!!! Well done Western Digital company lol.... My one and only issue, which by no means is faulted by WD, would be I no longer have the Portable Hard Drive. About 2 months ago, my house was broken into and burglarized, the thief or thieves took every single piece of technology they could find, including this Portable Hard Drive (although, they did NOT think to take its unique cord along too).... as well Im hoping whom every has it now isnt able to break through the security programming and has a useless component! .... ... I have emailed amazon to see if there is anything they could help or inform me of, ANYTHING could help; as well as contacted WD through their website, hoping there is some bit of information they could enlighten, maybe even brighten my outlook.... I am a very highly satisfied customer of WD and Amazon, and currently researching my next WD Portable Hard Drive with full intentions of purchasing another WD brand product, when the time is right that is.....

This model is the 2015 generation of the many My Passport drives Ive owned or purchased for clients. They have proven reliable and good performers. They have incrementally improved with each new generation. BOTTOM LINE (for the impatient): The new model is a little bit faster than last years and adds a 3TB and 4TB model. This My Passport Ultra has a more attractive satiny finish and there is now a white model to fit in better for Mac users. Otherwise its almost identical to the older model. Im updating the rating on this from one to three stars after some kind members offered me help on getting it to work with my Mac Still not an easy task but it is possible and even easy if you havent yet stored a lot on the drive. However if you have a lot of data from a Windows pic on the drive its still quite a process to get that to you Mac not simply a plug and use. Ok heres is the problem with this admitted stellar value USB drive NOWHERE DOES IT TELL YOU IT WILL NOT WORK WITH A MAC. Shame on you Western Digital. Shame Shame Shame. I understand there was a time in history that it was considered acceptable for a company to ignore Apple products and pretend they no longer existed and that is (NO) was accepted because for a while they didnt really exist. However that was what ten years ago at least! I bought this drive to back up some very valuable files of my deceased partner, memories, photos, documents that I cherished and wanted to preserve, which i could as long as i didnt buy a new Mac computer. After I bought a Mac i discovered that yes I could use this drive after I reformatted the drive,erasing all my beloved memories and starting from scratch. Tech support was atrocious and the only positive info they gave me was that i couldnt use the drive without erasing everything on it. So bottom line....If your sticking to Windows for life and want to save your lifes work then buy this drive. If you decide to migrate to a Mac, throw your life on this drive away and start from day one in your new Mac world. When will companies learn that we just all want to get along?

Good: The bundled software offers a great amount of customization, security, and stability options, though it has its downfalls. The USB 3.0 is fast, and is also backward compatible with USB 2.0. It is small enough that it fits in my blazer pocket. Stylish design. Bad: The backup software wont allow me to select and de-select only the folders I want to back up; as a result, Windows 7 Backup and Recovery is vastly superior. The included USB 3.0 cable is way too short. The activity light is where the USB port is, so it is difficult to keep it facing me. Its a great value for the price and is well worth the purchase. The software has its ups and downs, but, all in all, it adds to the value.

Very nice. I use it as an external backup for my small email server on a Windows 10 machine. I enabled BitLocker for full disk encryption on it and connected it via USB port and enabled Windows File History backup on it. So far works really well. CON: One downside is that if you have an older computer, Windows XP for instance, this drive will not work with it. I learned it the hard way. Luckily I had another (newer) computer to use it there instead. CON2: The drive does not have a power supply. Which is good if you want to save space and a wire clutter. But it is also bad if your USB port is underpowered.

I am a big fan of WD portable drives ever since they started to come out and they have never failed on me. Im done using those powered, bulky external hard drives. These are very portable and reliable in my opinion. Choice of colors is also great if you like to separate your media into different drives. I have purchased all 3 colors and all 3 look great! I use the black drive for my movie collection hooked-up to an apple tv in the living room, the red drive for all my sensitive and personal media like family photos and video, and the blue one for my music collection which I actually take on the road (as a backup) with me and for when I have dj gigs. I sync this drive with my laptops music collection. All 3 drives get constant usage on an almost daily basis. Very recommended!
