This product has auto backup. That feature does not work if your computer is in sleep mode. WD has not, and will not provide guidance on how to wake the computer (using features like Windows Task Scheduler)--Ive been told that repeatedly in email contacts with WD and by phone. There is an abundance of technical support articles, but this is one WD will not help you with. There are work arounds, but I was surprised at how resistant WD is to helping customers.

Pros: Includes ability to encrypt drive with a password - this is the main reason why I chose this drive. This is a must in case you are travelling and the drive gets lost, stolen, or accidentally left somewhere your sensitive files will be safe. The encryption utility is seamless and works very good - you can add/remove/or change the password anytime without affecting the files on the drive, as well as have the drive automatically unlock on certain computers. Pretty good transfer speeds over USB 3.0 - topped out just over 100 MB/s Cons: This drive is much thicker than my 1TB Passport drive as well as my 2TB Seagate drive. It seems like they could have made this drive thinner since there are other 2TB drives that are not as thick. The case is a fingerprint magnet.

I have used WDs My Passport external HDs for a long time and they have proven to be very reliable and trustworthy in all of their iterations to date. I recommend them highly. As with any magnetic media you do need to take some care with them (they are not baseballs), but the even the original one I got ~5 years ago still works. I have reduced my rating by 1 star because the two most recent drives I received from them used GPT in spite of the fact that it was less than 2 Tb. Given that most non-PC devices still wont interact with GPT (many still require FAT32), and that the other primary reason for installing GPT is for a boot disk or highly partitioned disc (both of which require changing the partitioning) I felt this an important drawback (I am skilled enough it was only an annoyance, but they may lose a sale to both their and my future customers due to this added skill barrier in using the HDs).

Ive been using this for a few months as a backup drive for my iMac. I have it velcrod to the back of my mac and I plug it in once a week or so, let TimeMachine do its thing and then eject and unplug. It spins up quick and I have no issues. Its amazingly small and doesnt make any noise - which is great with keeping down the clutter. Setup was very easy, I reformatted it, selecting the format type of Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to clean up any things they may have pre-installed on it. Then opened up TimeMachine from the Settings app and selected it as the drive to backup to. Then you just need to give it a few hours for the first backup. Quick and easy.

Excellent disk. Compact, light and fast. I bought it to backup my Mac with Time Machine. At first I was unable to format it on MAC although I am not a novice user, so I come to think that the product was defective. I contacted WDs technical support and in a few minutes they helped me solve the problem. Now it works perfect. 100% MAC-compatible

I purchased the 2TB Black Standard External HDD: Feels sturdy and looks professional, 3.0 USB provides great data transfer speeds for the large files (mostly used it for video and edited images), and a great amount of space for the price. As you would expect from WD.

Got the item and after it warmed up from being out in the cold delivery truck I hooped it up and in about 15 minutes had software installed updated and my complete backup completed. Love this item even though I know there are newer more improved models this one works for my situation.

Only reason for 4 stars as I cannot figure out the automatic backup and if I need to use it that way. I use it only to back up my Photos and so far it has been quite reliable. I wish I could figure out the software.

Didnt work. Got error messages that the drive was full. WD website support link in supplied materials led to a dead page. No product support phone for WD; website couldnt resolve issue, and they suggested looking in their community support. I reached out to Amazon and they took care of me immediately, and is sending me a replacement overnight! Tried second one, this one had proper downloads and all, but still didnt work with Time Machine: wouldnt erase/said no room on HD. I then tried to use the WD-supplied software for their own backup software, but the instructions on how to use backup software with Mac didnt match what was downloaded. A very confusing two-hour experience. Saw some fixes online that involved doing some coding and partitioning, but no thank you. Ive had other brands for externals that worked immediately with my Macs, so Id guess that WD is more of a PC-friendly external.

So far so good. I have only had a few weeks sooooo long term I dont know. I have had bad luck with losing data on these things. After doing a lot of reading of reviews I decided to get the WD 2TB Passport. It doesnt heat up to much and it is very fast. Lets hope it continues.

The My Passport Ultra is trusted, portable storage in a design that brilliantly pairs metal and matte finishes to create a sophisticated style. It has plenty of space to store all the content you love. Social media and cloud storage import, WD Backup software and password protection help keep all your memories safe and secure. Easy to use, just plug it in to start saving and backing up.
