I have the old Passport Ultra and this is the same pretty much except it is more boxy and a tiny bit bigger. I like the aesthetic and the performance is on par with other external hard drives. The reliability is worth the premium over the Seagate, definitely would purchase again.

Used it with my Xbox One S too beef up the storage since we all know that 500GB is not enough nowadays. After plugging the hard drive into my Xbox, you need to format it which takes about 5 seconds, and youre ready to go.

Strengths: - Plug and play mechanism, optional software is easy to use and useful. PC detected the external HD immediately with no problems whatsoever (using Windows 7 64-bit). - I like WDs straight to the point minimalist packaging and design. Weaknesses: - The glossy finish gets easily scratched. Additional comments: New design is slick in comparison to a WD My Passport from 2010, but this is a matter of taste. Anyways, a USB 3.0 cable is included but I did not capture a photograph of it.

This is the third WD My Passport external hard drive Ive purchased over the last two years. I use them, along with both free and subscribed CrashPlan accounts, to back up the data on a variety of laptop and desktop PCs. The WD drives serve this purpose well; theyre incredibly easy to set up and use as either dedicated or multi-system drives, and -- like the internal WD drives Ive used over way more years than I care to admit to -- they run and run and run. Buy a good carrying case (I like the semi-hard cases; more room inside for the cable) and youre good to go for extended road trips with your laptop. WD also provides backup software with these drives, but I havent tried it.

Just got it today. Brand spanking new as advertised. So far, Im impressed! The Read/Write speeds are pretty damn good in my opinion. Ive transferred a 22.5GB game onto it in less than 5 minutes. Leaps and bounds from my VERY outdated WD MyBook Essential. This External drive does NOT require an external power source; which I was somewhat surprised by. Its a little bigger than my wallet, which also threw me for a loop. I cant believe its so small! Its also CRAZY quiet! It doesnt have any ventilation/fans that I can see... so its STEALTH quiet. I thought it wasnt working initially until I touched it and felt it vibrating. I cant think of a single fault with the item I have. If anything; the USB 3.0 cord that comes with it is rather short; Less than a foot Id say. (Shorter is better though as far as transfer/stability goes, so Im not that upset about it)

Update as of 9/11/17: Got it less than 5 months ago. Today, I noticed that it had not backed up in 2 weeks. Tried Backup Now and nothing happened. Cant access Settings. Software no longer works so no longer backs up. Total junk. Dont waste your money on WD. Buy a Seagate. Had a Seagate drive for my Win 7 laptop and never had this problem in the 5 years I owned it. Easy to install. Problem is finding your stuff. Western Digital unnecessarily buries your files in a maze of subdirectories, the first of which is not at all intuitive, especially for non-geeks. When I first looked at the directory for this drive I thought, so where is my stuff? My old Seagate external drive shares this problem. Both companies need to realize their customers are all not computer geeks. Definitely not user friendly. My spouse would never be able to locate our files on this drive.

In short I returned the Western Digital HD. I originally got this portable HD because of the reputation of Western Digital, as the reviews showed it to be a great HD. Once I received it, I found the website, which as a life lesson I have learned to check out first, to read the manual. I was surprised to find that the security of the Western Digital HD is best described as Security Theater. Yes, the HD can be secured with a password. Great. Although, as I found reading the online manual, if you forget your password, it can be erased along with the contents of the entire drive. Yes, forget your secure password and you or anyone else, can erase the password and the entire contents of the HD. Well then, dont use a password. Then anyone can come in after you and setup a password and lock the HD. Can you say ransom? Yes, this could be done for ransom, but also for spite, or by accident. Which brings us back to the if you forget your password feature. So, dont setup a password and risk one being done for you, or setup a password and anyone can come along later and erase the password along with the entire contents of the HD. Either it is secure or it is not. Anything else is Security Theater.

Bought it at $69.99 and has worked great for me so far. Has good download/upload speeds and seems like its built well. I have not had any corruption issues with it and hopefully wont because its being used to store backups.

One month in: no problems. Plug the thing in. The software is as simple as tying your shoes. Tell it what to backup and when and youre done. Issues: 1) When WD Backup runs as scheduled it creates a pop-up from the taskbar advising its backing up and the taskbar remains locked on-screen till the backup is complete. 2) If My Passport isnt connected to the laptop when the laptop is shut down an error message dings. The laptop goes ahead and shuts down with no apparent problems but getting that error message is damn annoying.

The My Passport Ultra is trusted, portable storage in a design that brilliantly pairs metal and matte finishes to create a sophisticated style. It has plenty of space to store all the content you love. Social media and cloud storage import, WD Backup software and password protection help keep all your memories safe and secure. Easy to use, just plug it in to start saving and backing up.
