> 3 dayI bought this hard drive to use as external storage for my PS4 after seeing it recommended for such. It works great and is very simple to use. I plugged it up to my PS4 and at first the PS4 said the device was not supported. This is perfectly normal as the hard drive must be formatted. Simply go into settings > devices > USB storage devices and choose the My Passport device. From there, choose Format as Extended Storage. Formatting only takes about 10 seconds, and from there you can move game files from the PS4 to My Passport. Thats all it takes. I highly recommend this for PS4 external storage.

Greater than one weekThis holds a lot of my photos. Im disappointed since the transfer rate is only about 15 MB per second. Larger video files go a lot quicker reaching 50 MB/sec.

02-06-2025WD is the way to go, especially when theyre not putting garbage shovel-ware onto their External Hard Drives, and Im happy to report that there isnt any of that crap on this one. It requires no power to use this device other than the USB port, and from my experience wont give up on you after a year like most seagate drives Ive handled have. In this day and age, Dont get anything less than 2TB. The difference in price between 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB are extremely measly (50 for 1TB, 60 for 1.5, 70 for 2Tb). Thats 20$ more for double the capacity. And if youre buying this, you probably already filled up your primary hard drive. So just get the 2TB, or higher.

08-06-2025Ive been using WD drives for backkups for years. These dont disappoint. My only beef is an ergonomic one - the squared off shape in this generation is a bit of a tight fit in the Amazon Basics cases. They do fit however.

> 3 dayFor the money it has a lot of storage and is not as big as some older drives for the same amount of memory. It is a quite drive and I use is to store videos from cameras.

> 3 dayWorks exactly like it should. Not sure that I am a fan of the software that it comes with and would rather use it without. I mainly just use it to have a copy of my word documents and store my steam games. I can play my steam games off of this no problem. Not a fan of the light on it either. I would rather it just stay on without blinking whenever its being used. Ive put a small piece of electrical tape over it to keep it from bothering me

> 3 dayOnly reason for 4 stars as I cannot figure out the automatic backup and if I need to use it that way. I use it only to back up my Photos and so far it has been quite reliable. I wish I could figure out the software.

> 3 dayThis is one of the BEST digital drives Ive seen. Its compact and super easy to set up and use. There are more included extra features than most. I cant say that I could find even one thing I didnt like about it. I would highly recommended product.

Greater than one weekDidnt work. Got error messages that the drive was full. WD website support link in supplied materials led to a dead page. No product support phone for WD; website couldnt resolve issue, and they suggested looking in their community support. I reached out to Amazon and they took care of me immediately, and is sending me a replacement overnight! Tried second one, this one had proper downloads and all, but still didnt work with Time Machine: wouldnt erase/said no room on HD. I then tried to use the WD-supplied software for their own backup software, but the instructions on how to use backup software with Mac didnt match what was downloaded. A very confusing two-hour experience. Saw some fixes online that involved doing some coding and partitioning, but no thank you. Ive had other brands for externals that worked immediately with my Macs, so Id guess that WD is more of a PC-friendly external.

> 3 dayI have nothing really to add here in regards to specs, speed, etc. I just want to clarify that this is simply the successor to the old Passport line from Western Digital. Because the case looks (and actually is) a little sturdier, some folks assume this is an upgraded version of sorts. Its not. It contains the same drive inside as the previous version. The case is just a bit bigger, and more rectangle in shape. There is a bit more clearance between the drive inside and the plastic housing, so in theory it might make this a tad more sturdy in the event of a very slight drop. This is NOT a military grade case. Think of it as a design change with POSSIBLY a little more protection. This new design will take up more space than the old style, which may or may not be an issue for you. The old design usually meant that the black case was the cheapest, and you had to pay extra for colors, usually about $10 more or so. Right now, you have a better chance to get a color case at the same price as the black ones than before. Its possible this is just an introductory price though. One odd thing is that when you order on Amazon, you may get the For Mac version - even if you order just the regular Windows version. The drive itself is identical, the only difference is the file format on the drive, which you can change. If you get a Mac version (HSF format) you can easily change it to Windows (NTFS), and vice versa. Newer Macs can actually read and write NTFS (write-option might be hidden) so this might be a moot point anyway. Why not 5 stars then if its all the same? Because ITS THE SAME. I expected faster drives inside for 2016. Instead, performance seems to be about the same as Passports from 3 years ago. There are no additional connectivity options either. At this point, WD should be able to add USB-C in addition to USB 3. It likely came down to cost, but considering how so many newer laptops and desktops from Apple and most PC-makers now include USB-C, I think one of the biggest hard drive makers should include this option now. If you purchase any of the newer Apple laptops, its all about USB-C now. So these drives will be useless unless you want to juggle adapters and dongles.
