So my husband is quite handy but most projects that are a little frustrating tend to inspire an array of expletives. We bought the cheaper screw in type at first which my husband hated . He essentially became a pirate . Do pirates curse a lot? I had a headache and within a day my 1 year old broke through them. I researched and read all the reviews. I ordered these, and hid as my husband installed the first one. He came into the nursery where my son and I played after about 5 minutes and thanked me! He thanked me! He sai these were so stress free and easy to install . Of course it took some time and hes not too excited about installing them on drawers but they work awesome. He told my son your mom just jammed you up buddy . My son can not get into them. Its a little more work to get into the cabinets for me but well worth it :) on to researching more for the other items in the house which my son is determined to injure himself on.

We got these tabs because the traditional tabs were not a great option for me. I am 6ft 3in so my larger fingers would need a good amount of room to unlatch a traditional tab, and because of the amount of free play required, I could then snap them too easily if I forgot and just opened the cabinet. Pros: The magnet locks install fairly easy and the provided screws are actually decent for the job. On hinged doors it is easy to setup for it to have no free play and keep the doors closed. Cons: When mounting magnet upside down (latch portion facing upwards like in picture), if the screw are not at the very top of slot in the magnet, then the latch mechanism will not spring back into place. For a pull out type drawer, this required me to use washers as a spacer for the top piece instead of just being able to side the lock portion upwards.

These are great if you dont want your child locks to be visible or leave small openings for cabinets to close on little fingers. You do need to drill them in to the cabinet, but everything is done out of sight, so we are able to use them even though we dont own our home. Yes, they are a little bit of a pain to deal with, but I dont think there are child safety locks out there that arent at least somewhat of a pain. Once you get the hang of opening them (you have to hold the magnet in EXACTLY the right spot and open the door while its still positioned there) and remember to grab the key before trying to open the door (it does take a little while), these work perfectly. Theyve made our cabinet doors so uninteresting to our very curious and active 7-month-old that he no longer even bothers trying to open them. I am giving them 4 stars only because one of the locks didnt work properly and we cant use it. Fortunately, we didnt need that one so I let it go.

Easy to install and the templates included are brilliant but I did find the screws to be so short they were really hard to work with...now I understand that you dont want them going through the cabinet but I would have liked them a hair longer. Buy an extra magnet. I love that I can turn off the magnet when my grandson is not here. Good value Addendum: I have read that everyone says you must drill a hole in the inside of the cabinet to screw in the screws...they do have a pointed tip but its not sharp enough. I used an awl to get a hole started and did not have to drill one hole. The unit has been up a couple of months now and Im very pleased. One lock comes open at times but I think its my fault and I need to adjust the unit up a bit which is not a problem because the screws are on a track that gives you leeway in either direction. Im still very pleased with this purchase. MAKE SURE YOU BUY A SPARE MAGNET! I put that off and then mine went MIA. Had it not been for the powerful magnet on the base of my power drill I would have had to wait for a replacement to access my cabinets.

So besides the fact that it does take a while to install, I really like these magnetic baby proof locks in our kitchen cabinets. It keeps our 16 month old from opening the cabinets without anything on the outside of the cabinet appearing as if though its baby proofed. Its a little pricey especially since we had to get 2 packages and you do have to drill into the cabinet, but if your on your first child and plan to have more- these are great. Just dont lose the magnet to open the cabinets ( we stick ours in the fridge) .

I just purchased our third set of these. The first two sets we used in the kitchen, the third we purchased for the bathrooms now that we are about to begin potty training. These are the best cabinet child proofing product out there. They are slightly time consuming to install but are worth it. Make sure to read the instructions, if you dont it can be slightly confusing. No marks are made on the outside of the cabinets, and they stay completely closed. A magnet key is used to open them. My daughter does have a alphabet fridge magnet toy, thankfully the magnet letters CANNOT open the cabinets. The decorative magnets I use to hang things on the fridge can open them. I would recommend tying a ribbon to the keys so you can hang them on higher cabinet nobs, and find them easily. These can be left unlocked by flicking the switch on the inside which is great for grandparents. I also leave my bathroom cabinets unlocked most the time and only lock them when my daughter is around for a while. I was also surprised how durable they are, our first two sets were installed in kitchen, we then moved and installed them in our new kitchen. None of them broke being removed, and installed a second time very well.

I was very paranoid about my son getting into the cabinet below our kitchen sink where we keep our cleaning supplies. After doing a lot of research, I finally decided on the Safety 1st Magnetic locks and its one of the best purchases Ive ever made. My son is a very clever two-year-old and has figured out how to unlock or break most of our safety locks in the house. Weve had these magnetic locks for over a year now and he still hasnt been able to get into the cabinet. We keep the key on a top shelf where he cant reach it, but its still easy for us to access it when we need to so we havent experienced any inconvenience at all. Installing the locks was also easy. It didnt take my husband long at all. The key also always works like a charm. I recommend getting a second key though in case you lose one.

Updated 4/2/16: I have to admit, my husband installed these. I didnt realize that 2 of the 8 did not work, they wouldnt pop back up after hitting the magnet. So when you close the cabinet doors, it wouldnt automatically lock...and he had already started installing when he realized it. So he thought, Its inexpensive to buy and worth it so well just buy another pack and that way well have more than one key. But to me, $30, is $30 and we shouldnt have had to waste two locks or uninstall the locks to return. So Im editing to deduct a star. Be sure to test out all the locks before installing. Also did try it with a smaller magnet, didnt help. Husb had a heavy duty magnet around and that does work. Even with the two broken locks, it still looks so much better than the alternatives AND my son already started to yank on it and it wouldnt budge, not like the other hook things that we installed the first time we childproofed. Original: Were using this as baby proofing so my active 1 year old doesnt open all of our cabinets. We tried the hook things, but my hubby kept opening up the cabinets too quickly and it kept breaking off. Then we went to those plastic ties that go around the knob, but it was kind of ugly (granted, after kids, the house really isnt the same so I didnt notice it until we put these in and it just looks so much cleaner now). Also, those plastic ties tended to rub on the cabinet paint (again, I didnt notice it anymore but my husband paints the cabinets so he noticed it). I subtracted one star because looking around for the one key is sort of a pain. They only give you 1 per set. Wish there were two or three so we can have them in multiple places. We put it on our fridge which is pretty central but I would recommend buying more sets if you want to install around the house. Havent tried with just a regular magnet, but maybe that might help...

Update: Tip - you can pick the lock with moderately stiff wire. I shut a drawer with the key in it. I had tested a spare magnet to make sure itd unlock, but of course, the only lock it didnt work on was this partic drawer. Neither did another magnet. In the end, I was able to pick the lock with old style plastic covered green garden wire. Spending $10 on another special purpose key seems silly. I had given up on these as not working in our older custom cabinetry after trying a year ago (thank god for the loop locks in the meantime). On the second round of installation attempts, I have been able to get success. I dont know why - perhaps I ignored their trying-to-be-helpful stick on templates, which just confused things here. Perhaps messing with the Safety First spring latches ground me down. Will update this with how frustrating misplacing the lock continually is... I bought

I ordered 36 of the other child locks and they are complete junk compared to these! I dont have children, but if I did I would want these locks. I have these locks on cabinets on a rental property that I keep some of my personal items in. They are not just for child safety. They are great because the locks are hidden and people cannot figure how they open. The secret is in the magnetic key. This brands key is very strong and works even through thick doors. The other brand has a weak key which is hard to open the locks. The other amazing feature is the push button to keep the lock open when you dont want to lock the cabinet or drawer. The other brand has a poorly made red handle that never stays in place and the cabinets lock when you dont want them to. The Safety 1st brand solves that problem with the pushbuttons. I use these in 3 homes now and I love them. Do not buy the other brand, only buy the Safety 1st brand as they are the best built, and work the best. Very strong and sturdy on even some of the hardest cabinet doors to lock. Installation is a breeze also.
