Man I love this game. Im not big into board games but this is something I would bring to friends and familys gatherings and teach others how to play. The best part of it is the portability. You can take it anywhere and as long as you have a hard surface roughly the size of a piece of paper, you can play. The pieces feel like quality and are easily washable. The pocket edition pieces are a good size. I honestly cant imagine what the regular edition is like because I think these are plenty big. But the regular edition may benefit from the pieces being heavier and therefore harder to accidentally bump. I will say Hive is kind of tough to learn however since you have to choose all the placements of pieces (unlike chess where you always have a familiar start). If youre new to the game, I would recommend starting with only the base game pieces first (bee, ant, spider, grasshopper, and beetle). As you get used to the game, I would then try adding the mosquito, as it doesnt change the game much but adds more versatility; then the pillbug (if you have it) because the ladybug is such an aggressive, strong piece thats good against new players; and finally the ladybug.

First, Hive is the coolest new game since I dunno when. I dont know why it doesnt have a national competition yet. Its like chess and go combined, kinda. My family must have played 500 games, and we are STILL discovering new techniques and tricks and combos. SECOND, this littler version is great, partly because it includes two new pieces - yay expansions! - and partly because it is smaller and easier to play on, say a restaurant table. Love it!

I’m so glad amazon included thickness in their review breakdown. Hive is easily 5/5. And honestly, if you are allergic and get bit or stung, easy 6 or 7 out of 5 thickness.

The best road game ever! Easy to learn, easy to play, yet the compoundness remains and makes each game unique.

The main attributes I love about this game over chess are that 1) there is no board, 2) there is a lot more freedom on creating the games territory, or hive. Like chess, each piece type has its unique style of movement. Its even more heady playing with the included Ladybug and Mosquito expansions. However, I want to play with all the expansions and bought the separate Pill-bug expansion pieces. The only drawback I see with this game is the occasional analysis paralysis.

We took this on vacation to play at the beach. It was so fun and strangers asked what we were playing. We made a few new friends because this game is so fun. 2 player short play casual fun.

My husband and I play a lot of board games and are always on the lookout for 2-player games. I was skeptical of this one because its compared a lot to chess. However, I still enjoyed it and my husband LOVES it. We played it like 4 times the first night we got it. The rules are easy and every game is super unique.
