> 3 dayAwesome upgrade for my aging laptop. I can’t hardly believe the difference it made for n the speed at startup, opening apps and files. Even browsing the web is much faster now. Easy migration and installation. Migration did fail on the first attempt due to bad sectors on my old hard drive. Included migration software instructed me to run chkdisk to repair the drive. Second attempt worked without a hitch.

> 3 dayThis is my second Samsung SSD. Got a Samsung 840 PRO 250 GB couple months ago as my C (OS) drive and its running out of space. Decided to double the storage and get 850 EVO 500GB. Consideration: Since Samsung SSD is at the top of all SSD drives in the market, my first question is which one to get? 850 PRO or 850 EVO 500GB? 840 has been served me well and I have no complain but is 850 worth the $80 premium over EVO version? The main differences are: 850 PRO / 850 EVO ---------------------------- Sequential read: 550MB/s > 520MB/s Sequential write: 520MB/s = 520MB/s NAND Type (32-layer 3D V-NAND) 40nm 86Gbit 2-bit MLC = 19nm 128Gbit 3-bit TLC Endurance 150 TB (10-year warranty) >75 TB (5-year) => But for the 500GB version, it actually has the same rating of 150TB of total writes. =>For me, 850 PRO is overkill for my setup and I would imagine I can get the next generation SSD even cheaper next time when upgrade is due in a year. If youre using it for business or mission critical applications, then this will be a different story. Performance benchmark of my old drive and the new drive: Samsung SSD 840 PRO 250 GB / 850 EVO 500GB -------------------------------------------------------------------- Sequential Read: 554 MB/s | 547 MB/s Sequential Write: 458 MB/s | 515 MB/s Random Read: 73844 IOPS | 78956 IOPS Random Write: 68772 IOPS | 71017 IOPS =>850 EVO is a little bit faster. Installation: (for my desktop setup) I’m upgrading my existing OS drive so it’s not a clean installation. If you don’t mind the trouble of clean installation (wipe the drive and install OS and all the software), it’s the most reliable way but I do not have time for that. Steps: 1. Open up desktop PC and connect the new drive using the SATA 3 cable (not included) 2. Run Samsung Data Migration software (included, or you can download from Samsung site.) It allows you to clone your existing drive (can be any brand of SSD) to a Samsung SSD. It will take 10-20 mins for the whole cloning process depend on how much data you have. 3. Once it’s done, power off the computer and remove the original cable/power. I also switch the SATA connection to use the same port. For example, if you’re using SATA port 1 for the old HDD, I connect the port 1 to the new SSD so it won’t confused the OS. Power on again and see if everything works. If it does, then you can safely remove the old drive. Conclusion: 850 EVO has the best price and value for any PC builds. It’s fast and reliable. 5-year warranty is long enough for any application.

> 3 dayConversion to the new drive using the Samsung software was painless. So far the drive has been great and performance is very good. Installed this on a Lenovo Twist i7 which is about 1.5 years old.

> 3 dayUsed it to upgrade my Macbook Pro Mid-2009 15. As exepected, the SSD is registering at SATA3 speed. It has given my old Macbook Pro at least 2 more years of life.

> 3 dayThis drive didnt improve Windows start-up times for me, but programs and data files certainly load quicker than before. I installed this drive on a laptop that is managed by my company. As such, I believe that the computer goes through several security and validation steps during startup. Perhaps that is why Windows starts up no quicker than it did with a mechanical hard drive. Another reason that Im not giving this drive the highest rating is that the installation software did not work. After supposedly cloning my old drive with the software, the Samsung drive would not boot the laptop. Maybe thats because the old drive was encrypted, but I feel that the Samsung software should have detected that. I successfully cloned the drive with Clonezilla, which I ran from a bootable USB drive.
