I have a late 2011 15 Macbook Pro that had begun to slow down over the years. This SSD has been the absolute single best upgrade to my Macbook Pro. For years I have been wanting to upgrade to an SSD but prices have been so expensive for 500GB that I never made the leap. Not only is this SSD incredibly fast but it is also sold at an amazing price. Since Ive installed it, my laptop has been soaring. Its so fast. Just the boot times alone when restarting the computer are like night and day from before. Apps open and run quicker. The whole performance of the system is significantly improved. I feel like Ive extended the life of my Macbook Pro for years. The Samsung 850 EVO is a great choice and you shouldnt hesitate to buy it. Id recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade to a solid state drive. In fact I bought the 250GB for a family member and installed it in their Macbook Pro as well. They were incredibly happy with it too. All in all, it was a great purchase and Im completely satisfied with it.

I make a large number of youtube videos and saving 15-20 hours of videos only uses around 1/3 of the memory

Replaced one of my 1 TB 5400 RPM harddrives in my Asus N76VJ Laptop in an effort to eliminate bottle-necking. I have an i7 processor, 2 gb Nvideo Geforce GT dedicated video memory, and 16 GB DDR3L Corsair Vengeance RAM installed. Install went smoothly - definitely had to get a SATA 3 to USB 3.0 cable to clone my boot drive. Got it locked and loaded, turned it back on and was floored. My only regret is I didnt jump onboard SSD sooner. I run a three monitor setup and will open several programs at once. The instantaneous nature of this SSDs speed is fantastic. If youre on the fence, go ahead and do it anyway. Dont skimp and get the smaller size either - the 500 GB is the size I went with, in lieu of going all the way with the available 1 TB. If I didnt also have a second 1 TB HDD onboard, I wouldve gotten the 1 TB Samsung SSD. Hell, Ill probably replace the last 1 TB HDD with a 1 TB Samsung EVO 850 later down the road. Damn good stuff.

    Greater than one week

Update: Failed. S.M.A.R.T and Samsung Magician still says the drive checks out, but it will not boot my system. Computer just became slower and slower over a couple of weeks and then completely crashed. Attempted recovery from a backup and even a clean install and Im getting write speeds of <1MB per second. Performed secure erase each and every time and still got the same speeds. Drive has locked twice during my recovery attempts. Swapped drive out for an old WD VelociRaptor and got right back up and running. Guess its time to try out that 5 year warranty. In two years this drive has endured numerous OS and game installs and a few full system recoveries from backup images, and it still has over 90% drive life remaining. The ruggedness of Samsungs 3D V-NAND is amazing compared to where solid state storage was a few years ago. I burned through an 830 Pro in just a couple of years and I opted to go with the cheaper EVO line this time around. Migrating my current OS install was a headache due to the previous 830 continuously entering a locked state. Gave up and reverted to an image backup I had and it loaded 288GB in under 15 minutes from another internal backup drive. Macrium Reflect was my easy button for backup and restore operations. Already had a bootable USB laying around, booted into WinPE environment and was back up and running in half an hour. After 13TB it looks like this drive is just going to keep going and going. Color me impressed. If Samsung keeps making stuff of this quality I may just keep buying it, but hopefully I wont have to for a while!

VERY fast. Windows 8.1 and 10 didnt need to install separate drivers, it handled it all by itself! My boot time is about 5 seconds now with windows 10, including POST.

In April 2015, I purchased 2 SSDs, one for each of my desktop PCs. One of the SSDs has recently failed, so I tried to return it to Samsung for warranty replacement. Long story short, Samsung refused to honor the warranty because the reseller I purchased it from, maxproductsales, is not an authorized Samsung dealer. I was happy with Samsungs customer service, as they were very responsive to make arrangements for the service. Once I uploaded my invoice, they saw that it was not purchased from Amazon (what I thought I did), but from a 3rd party reseller - maxproductsales. My request for warranty service was denied. This is my fault for not checking exactly where I bought the unit from and will have to eat the cost. I ordered a new replacement sold directly by Amazon.com, which is an authorized Samsung internet dealer. The 2nd SDD is still working fine.

I installed a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SATA III drive in an Apricorn Velocity Solo x2 Extreme Performance SSD Upgrade Kit for Desktop PCs and MacPro (VEL-SOLO-X2) PCIe card. I used the card in my Mac Pro Model 3,1 (early 2008) desktop computer in PCI slot 2. I use this combination as the boot drive on the computer with no issues. The operating system is OS X Yosemite (10.10.2). The Blackmagic Disk Speed Test read/write results are of the order of 450 MB/s as I recall (Note: The Blackmagic test cannot be done on the boot drive. To test the boot drive, you must boot from another drive.)

I am disappointed by this drive. The first thing I did once I got it was to duplicate an old, spinning drive, from my notebook. Everything worked fine for several weeks and then it just failed. I tried several times to re-mirror my old drive, which luckily I still had, but it never worked. In the end I tried performing a full re-format and then applying the mirror. That worked and so far so good but it has only been a week. Now I carry my old drive and a screwdriver with me in case this drive fails while I am on the road. If it was not so much faster there is no way I would run the risk. Update - This drive failed again on me. I have given up trying to reformat and reclone it for my notebook.

This is my first SSD that I installed in my latest gaming computer build. It came well packaged and included some software which is fairly useful. It is lightning fast and very quiet. Installation was a snap. It is the only hard drive I have needed so far and I have the operating system on it along with the my games. I highly recommend this drive. You just can’t go wrong.
