This game is so fun! I wanted something that my 12.5 year old son and I could play that WASN’T monopoly, for the nights when he has no tv and he’s driving me crazy. I would suggest playing a test game of two hands by yourself (that’s what I did) before you try and teach your kids because it took ME much longer to get the hang of it, than it did him. I was easily able to correct his play this way, without referring to the directions and slowing down the game. There aren’t SO many rules that it’s hard, just that reading them once isn’t enough. But once you play a few rounds and check yourself with the rules, you’ve got it :) We finished a 2 person game in about 40 minutes. He immediately wanted to play again. I thought it was dang fun playing by myself too. It’s a win!

Simply put, this is one of the most fun games Ive played. Its also got great art and design. The gem chips feel great in your hand and have a perfect weight to them. Games go fairly quick, about 30 minutes. Rules are easy to learn, but the game takes time to master. Luck (of newly placed cards) plays a role, but strategy plays a key role too. Figuring out just what strategy to use is a huge part of the fun, as it depends on what the other player(s) are doing, what cards are available. And after several games you are left wondering just what strategy *is* the best? Do you buy cheap gems to build an engine for future buys, or do you save up and buy the big payoff cards? Let the fun begin. And gems are pretty. Have fun Splending!

I cant give this game enough praise. I play a lot of games - board games, card games, digital games, and this is one of the best out there, and possibly my new favorite tabletop. The thing I love most about Splendor is its brilliant mechanics. The gameplay is fast, smooth, and easy to pick up. It provides that awesome rush you get from playing very complex strategy games, but it is delivered in ultra fast fashion. My two player sessions generally last about 20 minutes, and theyre super fun. Its a whole lot easier than breaking out Risk/Monopoly and clearing your schedule for the day. We can get a game of Splendor in after dinner, or two or three if we like (which we usually do, because its addictive and fun). I also give high praise to the build quality of the components. Way too many manufacturers try to get save a few bucks by getting cheap with the components (even big names, like Marvel), and the game suffers a consequence. Splendor, on the other hand, has top notch components that can handle boatloads of games, and even more importantly, theyre actually fun to play with. Instead of using cheap little cardboard tokens, which most games would employ, Splendor has awesome, heavy dutypoker style chips that represent the jewels (playing pieces). The cards are also some high high quality stuff, glossy and built to handle wear, with impressive illustrations to boot. The artwork further cements the fun theme, which is the final element that deserves praise. Get this game! Its super fun and you can learn it in minutes.

Game is awesome and a lot of fun- but my brand new game came with the box badly damaged/broken on one whole seam - which was really dissapointing. I would have bought locally since the price was the same as I qm kindnof particular about that kind of stuff.

My brother introduced me to this game. It is easy to learn, and for me, very addictive. I purchased my own set, and when my son really liked it, I purchased a copy for him. The concept is simple, but the strategy for achieving the end goal can be one of multiple ways. Overall, a well-crafted game that only takes about a half hour each time you play.

After playing this game a couple of times, I got into a mildly obsessive craze for the game. It is very simple and easy to pick up, with a good balance of skill, luck, table talk and pressure. Each game takes anywhere from 20-30 minutes and so far Ive been able to teach it to people aged 10-60 so it is a very versatile and friendly game all around. There is no game board, but just cards and tokens so it is very easy to set up. Lastly, I enjoy the design of the game, with how the cards are nicely printed with pretty backgrounds. The tokens for gems are also well accounted for, perhaps there is some appeal from the thought of getting different kinds of gemstones even though they are clearly fake! As for game play, the game supports 2-4 players, however, I think it works best for 3 or 4 players. This game is mostly about building up resources so that you can obtain more points, but as the game progresses there is more room for how your choices will impact the other players. It can become quite mentally intensive when you need to plan several moves in advance and anticipate what other players will do, but overall does not require too much thought or energy to go through a few rounds of the game. I would say it is a more laid back board game compared to some faster paced games out there, but it is definitely one of my favorite games to play with any group of friends!

This is a seriously light game. I cannot explain it, but I really love it. Splendor is the most simplified version of an engine building game out there. In the beginning, you cant afford anything. While playing, you get more powerful and use the gems you bought to but more powerful gems. There are some strategies that will win over others almost every time, but there is enough luck left in the game that any new player could potentially beat a seasoned player. Anyway, not only is it fun, but it is fast. If you know what you are doing, it can finish in less than 30 minutes, and very often, we decide to play again right away. Now, this belongs in the Play with the family category. I would not bring this with me to a board game night with my friends. You might, and your friends might thank you for it, but for us, this game is a waaaay far on the simple side to spend game night on. Also, there is another game called Century: Spice Road which I think is a bit more fun and feels a lot like this game. They are different enough to have both in your collection.
