I bought this AX88U during the pandemic, to provide faster better wifi coverage at home. I replaced my old router, connected to gigabit fiber ethernet service, and found that every 2 weeks or so the internet connection dropped, and only restarting the router fixed the problem. I blamed the problem initially on my VPN service provider, which was running openvpn from the router. But working with them, it became apparent that my ISP, every 2 weeks or so, performs a DHCP release, and the AX88U does not reconnect. My old Netgear router does. Searching internet, I see lots of other people have this problem, and ASUS has not fixed it; or worse they blame the ISP. So dont bother buying this router, unless you just want to run it as in access point mode (which does not have DHCP running).

Our neighborhood finally got access to fiber internet and my trusty AC1750 router couldnt keep up with the new 940 Mbps up/down speeds. I was able to set up the AXE-7800 in just a few minutes and the performance is fantastic. (I did buy a Cat 6 cable to connect the fiber modem to the router instead of using the included Cat 5e cable). The screenshot showing 874 Mbps down/823 up is from my laptop separated from the router by 20 ft and 3 walls. Even in the furthest reaches in the basement of my house, Im getting 300 down/150 up, which is more than adequate for my needs. I hope this router will be reliable over the long term, but so far Im very happy.

I am upgrading from a AC87U. So Ive been wanting to make the move from AC to AX protocol for awhile. And Im glad I did. The AX88U is definitely a top performer. Looking forward to my new phone which comes in about 6 weeks to try the AX side of the router. But overall I am really impressed with its performance handling of my 10+ devices at the same time. Havent found a dislike yet hence the 5 stars

So good I have two in my home. This router can handle the load of a lot of devices.

I had this to be a stand alone VPN router as my Fiber modem is for normal usage. Tech support for Asus said no problem and we wen back and forth with many e-mails and many hours on the phone until they stopped calling and returning e-mails - I assume they found they failed and their product cannot do proper VPN they way they promised it would, and now its past the return period so I am SOL - cant get my money back and I dont need a bridge. Im sure if you just want to use it in bridge mode its fine but they really failed in my eyes and it will be the last Asus purchase I and my tech colleagues ever purchase as they have not even offered me a refund. Im very, very disappointed.

I purchased this router in order to upgrade my home network to be ready for next generation devices. I spent hours trying to get this router to work. The wifi does not work properly, its buggy. If I factory reset the router the wifi would work for a short time then if you made any kind of settings (any setting at all not just wifi) the wifi would suddenly stop working.

Purchased in September 2019 and it died today (May 2021). I expected it to last more than two years. It sat in the same cool, dry spot the entire time and was exposed to no trauma. Worked great, until it didn’t, which is disappointing.

I have both A1 and A1.1 hardware revisions. It is mentioned on the white sticker on the router box.
